Ah, yes, Max and this video about Harada and Itagaki. Personally I tried to stay away from it, but I did watch the VOD. I heart Max, but at the same time I wouldn't take everything he say at face value (he even said it himself that many of us won't be surprised but he was, and I'll get back to that), because, as you said,

QuoteI could've sworn I had read about Itagaki admitting that it was more of a publicity stunt than his actual feelings on Tekken (and you can't say it didn't work) from well over a decade ago, but I don't remember for sure.

Exactly, and this was also on G4TV as well, but Max don't know this because he was strictly a Capcom guy at this point playing MvC2 and 3rd Strike. I thought nothing was wrong with Itagaki back then. Just very secretive and very competitive. The only person I thought was an asshole back then was Cliffy B, trying to keep up with being "hip" around that time. I do think it's fascinating to hear Harada's perspective though. I was entertained for sure lol.

QuoteStill, whatever your feelings are on either the individuals involved or their games, it really brings to light how competitive this genre was back then. I always appreciated DOA for being way quicker to cater to the home console market than most of it's competitors by being ver feature-rich from the get-go.

I get what you're saying, and I'm only saying this because you're not in the know (other people would damn near bite your head off because it's a sore spot), but do note that this is during the dark ages of fighting games (late 90's, probably 99-07 / 08). Yeah, you're probably talking financially and at home, but we can't just ignore the tournament scene because it was literally the FGC (Shoryuken.com in particular) that kept fighting games alive during this period. If you're speaking about how fierce the competition was between the players, oh by all means

It's literally a sore spot because it was basically Capcom vs everyone else (I come in at the end of 07 because I'm a GGXX player around this time. I don't become a SF player till 09-10 due to night school and whatnot. Brother-in-law got me into it, yadda-yadda, I've told this a million times now lol)

But damn, thinking back about it. Itagaki and Kojima could never do me no wrong lol.

Fair point on it being the dark ages of fighting games. Though, from my understanding there wasn't really a dark age for fighting games in Japan itself. Focus shifted from arcades to home consoles the more time went on (though arcades still remain popular in Japan to this day), but from my understanding fighting games were still a very popular genre there even in the mid-2000's where there was lack of casual interest in the West, outside of the hardcore tournament scene.

Oh, Japan itself. Disregard everything I said

There is a small shift towards consoles in Japan because of Co-Vid. Some arcades have closed (Mikado for Guilty Gear is gone  ). A-cho is the latest, but I think people are trying to fight to keep this one and around. I think the owner even said something about the youtube channel could go away so I think people are trying to reserve their videos too.

But yeah, you are 100% correct. Fighting games were always popular in Japan (even more now because of V-tubers and E-sports in Japan. The collabs are insane in Japan which makes me even more furious at America)
