I love this cover of theirs though. I think their darker sound works better here, and I love the lead.

I've been listening to a bit of The Cult lately. They really do kick ass. I remember that a couple of years ago, the band was performing at the club right by my house. It was only like ten or fifteen bucks and literally like a two minute drive. I nearly went, but some of my family from England came during the month, so I had to pass. I wish I didn't though.

I've laso been listening to Alice in Chains and Queensryche more than usual lately. The feud going on between Geoff and the band might be bad for PR, but damn if it didn't help with their album sales. I really need to add Empire to my collection.

I've been on a Purple kick tonight, and curiosity got me to check out Metallica's recent "When a Blind Man Cries" cover.

Blahhh. One thing they've always been able to do fine is covers (well, almost...) but it feels off. Kirk is the best part of the whole thing, and he still sounds as bland as ever. James' voice does not fit this at all and Lars' drumming has really turned to shit over the years. It's obvious that they meant well here, but the band is well past their prime.

Which is crazy, since Maiden's been doing it for even longer, and their "Space Truckin'" cover is ace.

VH1 had a poll going up on their website to vote for 100 hard rock songs in order to help them rank a top candidate for a new TV special or something.

Guess what won? I bet you didn't expect this

I don't know about you, but I think that it's pretty epic to see something like this win instead of the same old AC/DC or GNR songs.

I don't get why people say this(I've seen comments like this a few times recently), they have been mainstream as fuck since 1994. Shit, Dookie is still their best selling record by far, and "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around" are amongst their most well known songs(along with the American Idiot singles and "Good Riddance").

Eh, I don't know about that. They were never as punk as their contemporaries or the bands that they were influenced by, but they weren't really all that commercial until sometime after Dookie dropped, probably with their infamous Lollapalooza/Woodstock '94 appearances.

Well I mean, while Kerplunk sold extremely well for an independent record at the time, it's hard to say that they made the record for commercial reasons. They were just kids back then, doing cross country tours in a Lincoln, performing in basements and sleeping on floors. It's a little hard to call that commercial.

I personally have a hard time saying that the recording of Dookie was commercial, despite it being their major label debut. The only reason they signed with Reprise was because of Rob Cavallo, they had turned down several offers from majors prior to that. The amount of time that went into writing and recording that album was minimal, I think it was all said and done in just a couple of weeks, and they had no idea what that record would become. After it did explode, yeah they totally went commercial, but at the same time they kind of went their own way with it. And they kind of went in all sorts of directions this past decade.

The band has a very weird history, that's for sure.
