I prefer current 2D Mario to N64 and Gamecube-era 2D Mario.

But I wouldn't worry. The next 2D Mario will be something different since there's only one "New" game per generation.

The GC and N64 didn't have 2D games... Or is that the joke?

I have a feeling the next Wii U game will be another 3D game and that 2D Mario will be neglected some more.

Spark Of Spirit

It was a joke, yes.

I don't know what Nintendo will do next. But they launched with 2D Mario- there is plenty of time to make another one before generation's end.

As far back as the first game in the New series, the intention was made clear that the games would also serve to train younger developers with simpler tasks. In a way, the 2D Marios are definitely being treated with less priority over the 3D entries, but while the threshold may be lower the standards are just as high.

It's funny you should mention that, given the overall fact that they recycled tracks from NSMBWii into NSMB2. I mean, sure this is a great track especially when you consider how simple most of these overworld tunes are, but why directly lift it out of one game and drop it into another? At the very least, remix it or something. That's just lazy.

But, eh, this stuff is fine for the most part. It's not Nintendo's A-game, but I still tend to have fun with most of them. Really the only one that doesn't hold up is the original DS; Wii and even 2 still play pretty well.

Spark Of Spirit

The console NSMB games are class. 2 is decent for score attacking, but otherwise forgettable.

Again, while I wouldn't mind an A-team level production for 2D Mario game I'll still take games like NSMBU.

The only NSMB game I've played is Wii, and I actually quite enjoyed what I played of it. That said, I'm probably the only one on this board who prefers SMW to SMB3, so I'd love to see a new 2D Mario game in that style, myself.

Spark Of Spirit

You'd probably really like NSMBU then.

You are not alone man. World is best.

Yeah, I vastly prefer World to SMB3. Mostly because I suck ass at SMB3, and find SMW to be a better balance of difficulty. That and I just love the way the world map is laid out.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

I really like SMB3, myself, but World is just my ideal type of platformer. Everything about it feels just right, from the difficulty to the variety.

talonmalon333

I prefer SMB3 to SMW, but both are phenomenal. I think a new 2D Mario has the potential to be better than both, but they're just not using it.

Kiddington

I like them about the same, with maybe 3 getting the slight edge. They're both great games though.

So how is it? The footage I've seen looks gorgeous, but most people can't seem to be in agreement on whether or not this is a great game, or "just another platformer".

I'll be getting both for Christmas (the Luigi version as well, what can I say I'm spoiling myself this year  :happytime:), but I digress.

It's excellently designed. All the levels are tight and fun to play through, and the ghost house are the best in the series. But I'm definitely going to be honest when I say that it was the end of the NSMB line for me, I simply won't care enough when another rolls around. But of the NSMB games it's unquestionably the best.

Oh yeah, and the Luigi DLC is brutal.
