I've only played Super Mario 64, Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario 64 DS all in that order. I liked them all, got nowhere near beating any of them.

I've been playing the comet challenges in Galaxy 2, and they're okay for the most part/ But the purple coin stuff is just obvious filler. I could totally do without that. The main stages and hidden stars are all pretty great, however.

I wonder if Starshine Beach Galaxy is a reference to Sunshine? The Piantas, wide open space, sunny beach atmosphere, and Yoshi seems to imply it. Yoshi not dissolving in water already makes it 100 times better than any level in Sunshine.

I really wish I could like Sunshine. I love how colorful the game is and some of the levels are really great. It's so sad that the vast majority of the game is crap. :(

Kiddington

Wait, they have a Sunshine level where Yoshi doesn't die when he touches water?  :light:

Well.

Same here.

Believe me, I've been trying to like Sunshine for roughly 10 years, and I still can't get past the things that bug me about it so much (the gimmicky gameplay especially). I've never felt this way about a Mario platformer. I mean, 64 is dated, and it has it quirks, but I still love it. This... I just cannot get into. All this time later, and I still haven't beaten it.

Yeah, with SMS, it seemed like they more more interested in making a fun water gun than good platforming. All of the levels in the game range from mediocre to just bad. And the soundtrack isn't very memorable overall. Then there's the voice acting, which I never want to speak of again... But on the other hand, the secret levels are great, better than anything in SM64 (except maybe Bowser's levels), and the atmosphere was nice, which I think was enough to make the game enjoyable.

Starshine Galaxy is like a level from Sunshine done right. But even then it's one of my least favorite levels because you spend to much time walking from point A to B instead of platforming. My biggest issue with Sunshine.

I haven't played it in YEARS, but the game really took the wrong step at every turn.

Wide open spaces with no clear direction? Check.
Lack of power ups? Check.
Boring gimmick that completely breaks the flow of the game? Check.
Yoshi worse than he was in even Super Mario World? (He could swim there) Check.
Ridiculously dumb story? Check. (And HOW!)
Lame bosses? Check.
Infuriating camera? Check.

It took the best parts of SM64 and got rid of them and added on to the worst parts of it. I'm glad it got a bad reception because it was exactly everything I didn't like about Mario games.

The hidden levels were great, though. I was so excited for Galaxy when I heard they were going to make a game on those.

Lame bosses? Check.

Apparently, the final boss is fought in Bowser's bathtub (I never made it far enough in the game to fight him myself, I only have the videos to go off of).

I mean, that's just...  :whuh:

I know this is nitpicking, but one thing I both hated and liked in Sunshine was that you could actually see other stages if you looked in the distance, but you couldn't go to them without jumping through a graffiti portal. If nothing else they could have made the game open-world and have you go to and from any stage from another stage.

QuoteYoshi worse than he was in even Super Mario World? (He could swim there) Check.

Yoshi's my favorite Mario character, but I thought the fact that he couldn't go in the water without dying (when he could swim previously) was just stupid. And what's with him spitting out fruit-juice?

Spark Of Spirit

Yoshi was so disappointing.

I stopped playing literally right before this point. But believe me, if I had gotten to that point I probably would have sold the game off. I was already getting pretty burnt out on gaming at the time.

How do you make something like Super Mario Bros. and see this as the proper 3D extension? There was nothing "Mario" about it.

I remember liking that harbor world with the blooper races and stuff. It's really the only fun level that I can recall.

The game was also too goddamn hard (not challenging; frustrating). That stupid giant watermelon mission was the first time I ever ragequit a video game.

See, I got all the way up to the level leading into the final boss fight, died a couple of times, decided it wasn't worth finishing, and stopped playing. Kinda' glad about that now...

Boy, all this Sunshine hate kind of makes me feel awkward for liking the game. :whuh: I mean, it's not even close to being my favorite Mario and I haven't played it in years but I remember enjoying it overall.

The worst one was the one outside the Hotel level where you have to clean up a bunch of electric pain. That was pure BS right there.

It's been a while since I've played it, so I don't really have a fresh opinion on it. Maybe I'll replay some of it over the summer to form a fresher take on it.

I'll be replaying it once I'm done with Galaxy 2, but I'm not expecting all that much out of it. I just... didn't connect with it at all.

That said, the final boss is a joke. Bowser sitting in a hot tub and all you have to do is... tip the hot tub over and have him fall out.

I'm not kidding.

For the record, I don't "hate" Sunshine. I just don't really "like" it. :awesome:

I mean, I don't know. I tried to play it again a few months ago, and it yielded largely the same results as last time; it got boring real fast, and I lost interest after about 10 minutes. I don't know what it is, but I simply cannot get into this game. The constant overuse and dependence on FLUDD probably has a lot to do with it.

I think I should probably delete my save file (the one I've been nursing for about 9-10 years, and still haven't beaten), and just completely start over. Maybe then I'll get a better take on it.
