Looking back at the PS3

I've decided to totally rip off Desensitized and start my own console thread, only this one is about Sony's black box.

All I can say is that this system was a colossal disappointment to me. I own all three consoles and can safely say that I play the PS3 the least. There's just no excuse for how badly this system turned out. The library is sub par (NO GAEMS). The graphics aren't even close to what Sony promised they would be. And despite every game being on Blu-ray, most multiplatform games run much better on the 360, and the rest of the time it's a wash. The only game I can think of that is better on PS3 than 360 is Dragon Age: Origins. I've never played that so I don't know for sure.

Don't think I'm a fanboy or anything like that, because I hate Microsoft and loath FPS. But what happened to you Sony? You used to be so cool.

There aren't a lot, but that's not really true. It has more quality exclusives than the 360, honestly. Also, unlike the 360 and Wii, it is extremely easy to import games for the PS3. Some exclusives:

Yakuza series
God of War 3
Ratchet & Clank Series
Metal Gear Solid 4
Valkyria Chronicles
Demon's Souls
Siren: Blood Curse
Uncharted series
Killzone series (ugh)
Heavy Rain (double ugh)
Sly 4 (not out yet lol)

Vanquish, Final Fantasy 13, and LA Noire all perform noticeably better on the PS3. Granted, of those games, only Vanquish is actually good. On the flip side, the only game I can think of that's actually worse on the PS3 is Bayonetta. Both consoles seem pretty evenly matched, for the most part.

Can't wait 'til my brother brings over his PS3. I love that console. I still need to beat Infamous.

Ahh, Infamous. Another quality exclusive! Not a huge fan, but they're good games.

Dammit, well I'm looking forward to playing Resistance 1 and 2.

Having more quality exclusive than the 360 is subjective, since IMO both consoles are REALLY lacking in that department. There are only a handful of decent quality exclusives that I can think of the the 360, and even then it doesn't necessarily mean that I like all of those game to begin with. As for the PS3, though, it has more high-rated exclusives, but I happen to think that at least half of them are incredibly overrated (like Uncharted, Killzone, God of War, Little Big Planet, Infamous, etc.). That said it does have Ratchet and Clank games and it also has the Yakuza games going for it, so those are still quality exclusives that I would actually want a PS3 for. Still, I generally feel that almost all of the AAA games on either the PS3 or XBOX360 aren't worth nearly as much as everyone else seems to think.

Even though I don't own it, I can easily name at least 20 Wii exclusive games that range from good to great that all actually interest me in some way, which is more than twice of what I can say for either the 360 or PS3, honestly.

Spark Of Spirit

I also play the PS3 the least, but that's for several reasons.

1. Most third party games are just better on the 360. I know not all, but pretty much all the ones I'm interested in.

2. Xbox Live is light years ahead of PSN. Sony has got to be the most user unfriendly company in existence, and PSN Plus is a ripoff.

3. Sony has no respect for it own series. Can you count the number of PS1 franchises still being made for the new system? No, because Sony cuts all of them off at the knees. I can bet that Killzone and Uncharted will be dead by next gen. I'm not happy about Twisted Metal having an online pass, either.

God of War 3
Ratchet & Clank Series
Metal Gear Solid 4
Valkyria Chronicles
Demon's Souls (Dark Souls renders this pointless for me)
Siren: Blood Curse
Uncharted series

Heavy Rain (double ugh)

Sly 4 (not out yet lol)
That's not really all that impressive to me. I'm really not anticipating what the PS4 will bring after Sony utterly dropped the ball on this one.

I got a PS3 over the 360 for two reasons

1.I heard more 360's having the Red Ring of Death than I've heard PS3's having the Yellow Light of Death.

2. It's online service and features are free.

That being said, I agree that the system is severely lacking in exclusives that I'm interested in

I still like the system, I just don't think its library is as strong as its predecessors.

Commode

I've got all three consoles now too, and I think I like my PS3 about the same as a like my 360.  Both have weaknesses, I dislike the PS3's controller and love the 360s, however the lack of Wi-Fi built into the 360 bugs the shit out of me(I know they fixed it in the hardware revision, but I feel it should have had it to begin with).  I've actually had my 360 longer than I've had my Wii, but I've played the Wii way more than I have with the other two combined.

I will say this though, the Slim versions of both consoles are miles better than the originals(even though I don't have the Slim 360, but I've played them).  The phat versions of both seem to be the bulkiest and most unstable machines ever designed to play video games(both are big, both are heavy, both are noisy as shit...).

And yeah, what's the advantage of being a PSN Plus member?  Other than you get Simpsons Arcade for free?
It doesn't matter what you say, soon you'll be dead anyway.

Spark Of Spirit

Oh, I don't doubt MGS4 is a good game, but basically being MGS2 Deluxe Edition means I won't be going near it any time soon. Even if it was on the 360, I wouldn't consider it a plus for either system.

Here's the rub; once you lose PSN Plus the game is no longer free and you have to pay to play it. It's fake value.

I've tried some of MGS4 before. Its actually not bad despite me not really being into stealth games. That said its also something that I don't think I could invest a lot of time into. I appreciate how its very open and allows players to treat it like an action TPS if they can't stand stealth (though then it becomes a lot harder than it needs to be, obviously, since its not really meant to be played that way), but overall its just a gameplay style that isn't for me. I respect the game and its level of polish, but yeah, I'm just not into stealth games much like how some people on this board and others that I go to are not into FPS games. Some gameplay styles just don't get me engaged, personally, but that's really all there is to it. I won't deny that its a great game for people who do like that sort of gameplay.

I have played MGS2 in full (and twice, as a matter of fact!) on my XBOX, and it wasn't really a bad game but it certainly wasn't my cup of tea at all. The only reason that I replayed it was because I had played it on Very Easy the first time through since I suck at stealth games and didn't really enjoy it. My older brother actually likes the game though and he recommended that I try it on Normal since its more fun with more challenge. So, I actually did play it on Normal, and I'll admit there were a few instances in the game in which it felt rewarding to pull off some successful stealth using clever tactics and without getting spotted, but overall I just couldn't get into the whole experience at all. What I will say is that I loved some of the side-missions in the game, that were basically like arcade mini-games. To me those were actually more fun than the main game itself.

I remember I was hyped up for the original version of Infamous 2. But then the backlash forced Sucker Punch to make the second game a complete rehash.

I gotta say, most of the best PS3 titles come from the 3rd parties, since Sony's own studios output have been pretty terrible this gen. Well, not terrible, but completely forgettable. I highly doubt anyone's going to look back fondly on MAG, Killzone 3, or Infamous 2 down the line.

Oh, has anyone tried those Atelier Totori games? There seems to be a lot of them on the PS3, and they're pretty cheap at the store right now. I wanna know if its a game worth picking up, or if its as generic as something like White Knight Chronicles.

My friend loves the newest one. I've never played it, though.

Mostly just a change in aesthetics. But it certainly looks more interesting than the final version.

I still don't have a PS3. Still. It's the only current gen console I never did get around to buying.

Basically, its library doesn't interest me much at all (I mean, Sly 4's pretty much the only thing I'm even excited about at this point, and that's not even out yet), and, you know, I'm poor as hell right now, so it's not like I could go out and buy one even if I wanted to. I do have some experience with it since a friend of mine has one, but of what he owns, very little of it is of any interest to me. Really, I'd put the Wii and 360 well ahead of it.

I dunno; when the day comes that I either find a job, or the price is massively reduced (whichever comes first, though at this rate, probably the latter), I'll get one, though I still don't what I'd even buy for it. I'd probably get Ratchet and Clank for starters, and one of these days, I would like to sit down and play Uncharted just to say I did (even though from what everyone says about it, it has absolutely no replay value whatsoever). We'll see.
