Resident Evil: A thread for the undead!

So, on GameTrailers they have a show called Invisible Walls where they talk about popular topics in gaming each week. About half of this week's episode was dedicated to Resident Evil 6 and the extremely polarizing reviews and opinions on it (the discussion starts about 30+ minutes into the episode). I only chose to direct everyone's attention to this because the GT reviewer who reviewed this game for the site actually gives it a lot of good and sensible defense to a lot of its criticisms (being one of the reviewers who gave it a higher score, and probably one of the better reviewers at GT), and there is a lot of good discussion about judging the game as an RE game and judging the game for what it is.

Some of what I heard in this discussion was actually enough to convince me that I should go out and try the game for myself even though I was admittedly hesitant to.

I think the point that the reviewer brought up that I like the most is the bizarre double-standards of the people who gave this game really low scores. A lot of them complained about problems in this game that are present in MANY other action games (many Western ones, to be specific), yet many of those games seemingly get a free-pass for it while they stress it to the max in their RE6 reviews. That's something that I have had a lot of problems with when it comes to reviewers these days. They are so inconsistent with their reviews and despite it being part of their job to try and look at a game without any bias, I see nothing but bias in most reviews written these days, which is what turned me off from listening to gaming critics in the first place a few years ago.

Yeah, I watched that last night. Excellent video. I agree with that guy (Shane I think) wholeheartedly.

Oh yeah, I finished all the campaigns. I wrote up a pretty long review, just waiting for GameFAQs to approve it now. Hopefully you guys will find it well-done.

My verdict is this:
Leon > Ada > Chris >>>>>>> Jake

Ada's campaign is... odd. Her first two chapters are far and away the game's best stages (three and four are quite good too), but her last chapter is absolutely miserable. Worst part of RE6 other than Jake 2 and 3. Also, I'd actually say that Chris' scenario is the most consistent and best-designed, but it's not quite as fun or exciting as Leon's or Ada's.

Overall:
REmake = RE4 > RE2 > RE3 > RE6 > REV > RE > RE0 > CVX > RE5

Foggle

Heh, in Resident Evil 2, Leon slides down the garbage chute as a shortcut. In chapter 2 of RE6, he does the same thing. Ada comments disapprovingly on this in her campaign.

Clever.

I might end up getting this game as a birthday present. I'm honestly trying to decide between this, Darksiders 2, or DMC HD collection.

Foggle

I haven't played Darksiders 2, but as much as I love DMC 1 and 3, I'd go for RE6. The Devil May Cry games are fairly short (and the second one just sucks), while RE6 will last you a long time just on the first run. Even if you hate Jake's scenario as much as I do, you'll still get a lot more quality gameplay out of Resident Evil your first time through.

Still waiting for GameFAQs to approve my review. :wth:

Well, with DMC I just love a great hack n' slash game more than anything else, and I wasn't looking as much into how much content it has to offer (but to be fair, DMC3 Special Edition offers up quite a lot of replay value). Also, the DMC collection is the cheapest option at only $30 as opposed to $60, so on a cost to content ratio I'd say that it evens out with RE6 pretty nicely (and just like how the DMC collection has a bad game in DMC2, RE6 also has a bad game in Jake's campaign, so it manages to even out there as well :D ). Also, in this case a shorter game may be better for me since I only plan to play in short bursts anyways, given my hectic and busy schedule.

That said, I'm still considering RE6 if only because I really do want to try it out for myself after seeing such polarizing opinions on it. As for Darksiders 2, I was kind of looking into that because its the closest thing I can get to a Zelda game in the XBOX360, and it did seem to improve a lot of what bugged me about the first game, but that's honestly the game that I'm least likely to get in this case.

Foggle

Well, you can't really go wrong with DMC. ;) Since you're so low on time, that might be the better option for now anyway, as you'd have to waste precious hours on Jake's crapfest just to unlock Ada's scenario.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

Oh yeah, Dishonored is coming out too. Add that to the list of games that I at least need to look into.

I still think I'm going to end up getting one of the Capcom games, though. I do still have a lot of interest in playing RE6, and the amount of content I'll be getting for my money with that game is definitely tempting.

Great review!

I'm moving through the game at a snail's pace. I have a co-op partner I'm doing it with so we can only really play when our schedules match up. But we started Jake's campaign and did the first chapter and, so far at least, we enjoy it. I'm playing as Sherry and my partner is Jake. I like how there seem to be some points where the two become separated and need to meet back up.

Also, something RE6 does that's cool that I didn't even know it could do, was having a third guy playing with us. We met up with Chris in Jake's story and I guess there was a guy online at that exact point in Chris' story so we wound up fighting the El Gigante-type boss all together. Really neat!

Cover in this game is messed up though. Strange because, despite my issues with the game, it worked so well in RE5. Just went up to the object, hit a button, and took cover. In RE6 you have to walk up to the object and hold down aim or whatever it's just really weird.

Here's my review!

Just to get some context, what do you rate the other games in the series (looks like you gave 6 a 7/10)?

RE1 - 7/10
RE2 - 9/10
RE3 - 8/10
CVX - 6/10
REmake - 10/10
RE0 - 6/10
RE4 - 10/10
RE5 - 5/10
Revelations - 7/10

Also, RE6 would probably be an 8/10 without Jake's campaign.

GOOD NEWS GUYS!

Capcom is going to be patching RE6 soon. This patch will make Ada's campaign available from the start, thereby negating the need to play scenarios you don't like just to unlock the fourth one. They're also giving it optional co-op... somehow. Don't really know how well that'll work tbh.

The patch will also include No Hope difficulty, in which even the basic zombies one-shot you. Fun.

1. RE1/REmake
2. RE4
3. RE2
4. RECV
5. RE3
6. RE0
7. RE5

We'll see how Revelaitons and 6 fit in there.

Foggle

IMO, RE6 (Leon) > RE6 (Ada) > Revelations (Jill) > RE6 (Chris) > Revelations (Misc. Other Characters) > RE6 (Jake)
