So there was a recent interview where apparently Capcom stated the next Resident Evil will be closer to the old games. I don't remember where I saw the interview, but it's out there. They must have taken all the RER and RE6 criticism to heart and are taking what people liked from those.

I would still like to play a classic-style RE with Revelations controls.

Hopefully they mean other than the RE2 remake.

All I care about is that they find a formula that works and feels like Resident Evil 1-4. It could be a goddamn beat 'em up or platformer for all I care, but it MUST retain that unmistakable RE feel. The Jill levels in Revelations and Ada levels in RE6 proved that they still know what they're doing, at least somewhat. Now they just need to go all in and actually make a game that truly deserves to be called Resident Evil for the first time since 4.

As I said before, I really liked the RER demo on the eshop. It had a good pace, it was creepy, and it really reminded me of classic RE. A full game of that is something I'd love to try.

It reminded me of when I played RE1, but with controls I can get used to.

The problem with Revelations is that the demo is better than the majority of the game. Which is the exact opposite of what happened with 6.

I mean, it's a good game, definitely, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the older stuff. The cutaway shooter levels and Genesis scanner are major hindrances. Not to mention that godawful episode 11 boss...

They've been throwing around stuff like "6 will be brutally scary" and "We're going back to the series roots now". So I'm just like "whatever" at this point. :??:

Spark Of Spirit

True, but the reaction to RE6 is definitely something they'll want to take notice of for next time.

Cut out the Genesis scanner and the non-Jill levels and it would have been amazing. Capcom really dropped the ball trying to add variety to Revelations. :-\

Just watched an interview about RE6. The game's producer all but confirms that the budget and development time weren't nearly enough for them to accomplish what they wanted as well as they could have. An actual quote from the interview:

QuoteOur goals were to get it done as quickly as possible and save as much money as possible

Apparently, the story was literally written around the 30 second cutscene in which Chris and Leon point their guns at each other. But if you think that's bad, here are some potential ideas they threw around to use in the storyline:

Chris dies for no reason, just because they wanted to kill off a main character
Ada has multiple clones, and each Ada from RE 2, 4, Damnation, and 6 was a different person
Wesker comes back to life (again)

Also, Jake is definitely going to be back in a future game, unfortunately. Though they did hint that the next game will probably be much smaller in scale and closer to the roots of the franchise.

So, with all of these characters going about on their own way in this massively long-running series, I wonder....what the fuck ever happened to Claire? Its been a while since she's played a prominent role in an RE game, hasn't it?

Foggle

Claire's story arc ends in Code Veronica. Her entire motivation was finding her brother... and she did. I mean, they could probably bring her back, but that would require creativity, of which Capcom is completely bankrupt.

The writers seem to just totally wing it with every single game. They really should have planned out a nice long storyline for future titles to utilize after RE2 sold so well.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

They probably should have planned things out to tell a much grander and more well thought-out story arc, but I suppose back then the mentality was just to worry about the next game one at a time rather than thinking in the grand scheme of things as a series that they would develop over time.

That said, while Resident Evil has never had legitimately good stories, I do miss the focus on the genuinely interesting back-stories from the classic games. The various texts that you picked up in the old games (which I still vividly remember back when I used to watch my friend play through some of the older games) told a story in and of themselves in the background of what was happening that was almost always really interesting to read and allowed a lot of room for interpretation. It was always exciting to me to piece together bits and pieces of the back-story as you progressed through the game, which made the final revelations a much more rewarding experience, whereas if you didn't have those text entries building up the story for you, the final reveals wouldn't have as much impact as they did. I wonder if those text-based portions of the story were handled by a different writer, because if so then whoever was responsible for that should have written the RE story-lines. :D

Resident Evil 2 actually had a really good story for the time. It was one of the first non-RPG games to have a coherent and engaging plot, even if the localization and acting were both horrible. It still holds up decently enough today, IMO.

The files are easily some of my favorite parts of the older REs... I honestly had more fun reading the backstory stuff in CVX and RE5 than I did playing the games. So, of course, there aren't any in RE6 (well, there are, but they're pretty lame and aren't integrated into the story proper).

Also, I love Resident Evil 4's dialogue. So funny!

RE4 has so many memorable and quotable lines. I can't say that about any other video game. Here are just a few of my favorites:

"I have only one, very important question to ask you... you got a smoke?"
"Got gum."

"I'm sure you boys didn't tag along just so we could sing Kumbayah together at some boyscout bonfire. Then again, maybe you did."

"I've sent my right hand to dispose of you."
"Your right hand comes off?"

"I see the president has equipped his daughter with ballistics too."

"Saddler, you're small-time!"
"Ha ha ha! Writhe in my cage of torment my friend."

"Well, if it isn't the bitch in the red dress."

"You're nothing but an extra in my script, so don't get too carried away. Your biggest scene is over."
"I don't remember ever being a part of your crappy script."

"No thanks... bro."

"Monsters... I guess after this there'll be one less to worry about."

"Since you're here, why don't I introduce you to "It"? It should keep you busy."
"Can't remember the name? A senior moment, perhaps."

"All for Umbrella's sake..."
"Umbrella?"
"Almost let it slip!"

"That's quite a big thing you have there. But I don't like it when men play rough."

"When we get out of here, drinks are on me."
"Yeah! Hey, I know a good bar!"

"MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE!!!"

"LUUUUUUUUIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSS!!!"

"You may be able to prolong your life, but it's not like you can escape your inevitable death, is it?"

"Hasta luego!"

"DON'T COME!"

"Bit of advice - try using knives next time. Works better for close encounters."

"Got some business to take care of. See you later."
"*sigh* Women."

"You know, you're kind of cute without those glasses. Gimme your number when I get back?"
"May I remind you that you're still on duty?"
"Story of my life..."

"If you must know, my name is Osmund Saddler, the master of this fine... religious community."
"What do you want?"
"To demonstrate to the whole world our astounding power, of course. No longer will the United States think they can police the world forever."

Best fucking game ever. I watch the cutscenes every time, and they still haven't gotten old.

Eddy

"Better find a new trick because that one's getting old!"

"Hmm? Where is the satisfying sound of one's impalement?"

"I used to be a cop. Only for a day, though."
"I thought I was bad."

"So, I was thinking, after you take me back to my place how about we do some... overtime?"
"Ha. Sorry."

Then, of course, there is the Merchant:

"What're ya buyin?"
"What're ya sellin?"
"Come back any time!"
"Welcome!"
"Eheheheh, thank you!"
"Not enough cash, stranga!"
"Is that all, stranga?"
"Ahhh! I'll buy it at a high price!"
"Stranga, stranga! Now THAT'S a weapon!"
"Ahhh! The choice of an avid gun collector! It's a NICE gun, stranga!"
"Ha! Stranga! What do you need that for? Goin' to hunt an elephant?"
