For a game as humongous as RE6, the budget of RE5 is pretty low.

You're right. I didn't take that fact into account. Heck, even RE4 was way bigger than 5, right?
If it was, then Capcom is terribly mismanaged.

HD games cost WAY more to make than SD games on just a base level.

Not taking Separate Ways and DLC into account, I'd say the main story of RE4 is about five hours longer (or more), plus it has Assignment Ada, but it also features less Mercs stuff and no multiplayer options, so they're probably about the same size in terms of sheer content.

But they run on the same engine, so there's really no excuse for the graphics not to be at least on par with 5's other than laziness.

Well, to be fair, RE6 is a MUCH bigger game than RE5, so its not hard to imagine that the sheer amount of content that was crammed into 1-disc could have cost them to have to sacrifice the more crisply detailed graphics of RE5, being that improving the raw power of the graphics takes up way more disc space. The developers probably tried to be more ergonomic and use more of the space to have more levels in the game and son on rather than focusing on making the graphics look really pretty. For what they are, I still say that RE6's graphic are well above average, and while they are a step down from 5, as I've already stated, I still like the overall look of 6 better due to the more interesting art design. So, as it stands for me, RE6 may have made a lot of things worse for the series, but out of all of them, lesser graphics are what I care about the least.

I'm pretty sure I remember Capcom admitting they were trying to push out RE6 as quickly and as cheaply as possible. And it really shows.

Regarding RE5, remember when they was first announced and they said things like light would play a big part of it? How if you were in a cave or a dark building and walked out into the blinding sunlight your eyes would have to adjust and how you would be using light and shadows to hide from the enemies?

And when it was still a solo experience?

Man, RE5 could have been great.

I think the PC version of RE6 is making me reevaluate my opinion of the game somewhat. It's so much better with keyboard/mouse controls and a constant 60 FPS frame rate. Like, the ability to just press a key to roll in any direction (instead of having to aim and move the joystick first) makes the combat much deeper, while the higher frame rate vastly improves the more cinematic portions by making them run butter smooth. That smoothness also translates to the base gameplay; the aiming is much nicer when the game isn't struggling to reach 24 FPS, not to mention how much more comfortable I already find using a mouse to be. Also, the game has apparently been patched since release, breaking up the chapters into more easily replayable chunks and making the FOV much wider (and therefore better).

This doesn't fix the awful level design of Jake's campaign, the near-constant QTE abuse at times, or the blandness of the lesser Leon/Chris/Ada chapters, but it does make what's good stand out a lot more.

talonmalon333

So does that make it...

a. An adequate game?
b. A bad game that's now stomachable?
c. Still not worth playing?

Foggle

A. I've pretty much reverted to the opinion I expressed in my original review, now.

Leon's first level is awful, though. Worst first impression ever.

I'm gonna pull a classic Talon and ask if you've got any updated ratings and rankings for that. :awesome:

This pretty much holds true. Ignore the bits about Leon's first level and final boss being good, though.

talonmalon333

7/10 ain't bad at all. I confess that even when you recommended against it, I was probably going to eventually play RE6 anyway, cause there's a part of me that just has to know what's up. :P

After 6 though, I can't say for sure if I see myself sticking around with this series.

Foggle

If future games are similar to Ada's and Leon's campaigns, or Jill's levels in Revelations, I'll stick with the series for sure. But if they push even further into the action territory like they did with Chris' and Jake's campaigns, and the side levels in Revelations, it will be dead to me.

TL;DR: Buy Revelations for your console of choice, pick up RE6 on PC during a Steam or Green Man sale for Leon's and Ada's stories.

Eddy

Leon's final boss is ridiculous even by Resident Evil standards. My actual words to my co-op partner during the
Spoiler
part where Simmons is running along side the train like some kind of horse monster shooting a machine gun-like thing of teeth bullets at you
[close]
were "What the fuck is going on?"

Foggle

I loved the train part! It was brilliantly cheesy. The rest of the final boss was awful, though.

Eddy

Oh, I loved it too. It was hilarious.

But yeah, the actual final battle is terrible. It drags out waaaaaaay too long.

Eddy

You know, despite all the faults with the main game, I find the co-op Mercenaries in RE6 to be a lot of fun.
