Katniss is led to a rising shaft tunnel which opens out onto a pedestal. The games have finally begun.
Finally.

Spark Of Spirit

That was actually my biggest problem with the film. Too much set up which lead to the Games getting rushed and the epilogue trimmed.

Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

CHAPTER 11: The Nightmare Begins

Yes kids time for the actual Hunger Games... and there are 15 chapters left.....yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

The Tribunes are all standing on their podiums. There are landmines scattered all around set to go off if any should step off in under 60 seconds. Time elapses and away we go. Katniss knows to ignore the Cornucopia as you're more likely to get picked off quicker going for that first, instead going for a backpack of supplies. One more dead tribune and a free knife inadvertently provided by the knife throwing girl from district 2 later, Katniss makes for the woods.

It is traditional that every time a tribune dies a ceremonial canon is fired, within the first 90 minutes that canon goes off 11 times. Once again Katniss hopes Peeta is among those dead so she doesn't have to do it herself, for both their sakes. Hoping to have water in the survival kit she acquired, Katniss is disappointed to find only a bone dry flask. Oh those wacky gamemakers! Forcing the tribunes into potential hazardous situations just to have something to live on!

At night the faces of the dead are projected on to the sky, Katniss is either relieved or annoyed that Peeta is still alive (I know how I feel....). Otherwise its a mess. The career tribunes are all still active.... so are Thresh and Rue from District 11...nothing else matters. Suddenly Katniss hears something she wishes she hadn't... the sound of a campfire not too far from the tree she is camping in. The girl who made it is quickly slaughtered by a five player alliance. The tribunes from 1 and 2....

and Peeta.

So they already kill off half the tributes in the first few minutes of the game? That's...really stupid.

Avaitor

Yeah, if you want to read some epic battle scenes, this is not the book for you. There are only like 2 deaths we get to read in full context, and one of them is fairly anticlimatic, while the other will just piss you off.

Like I said, there are serious pacing issues.

I hope you guys are eager to learn how Peeta, the guy without any sociability managed to sneak into the murderer group! Because you won't ever learn how he did it!

I chalked it up as.... magic.

CHAPTER TWELVE: Salvation Isn't Coming.

Ten more pages of filler...   :burn:

Katniss successfully kills a rabbit and cooks using the dying embers of the girl from District 8's campfire. She then sets out for water... that's the whole chapter just looking for water.... water.... water...

See I'm beginning to think that Collins was inspired by commentary about life in Vietnam. This book is nothing but long stretches of boredom punctuated by brief moments of terror. Or that's what this chapter was. I long for those days of Chapter One. STUFF ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THAT!!!!

Well anyway she eventually finds a pond and drinks to her heart's content...or at least until the gamemakers start setting the forest on fire!

OH JOY!!!
