Nice to see the other not giving her characters a "get out of trouble free" ticket, but even if she did, at least the characters would all have wonderful and colorful personalities and charm to them to make up for it.
???

Rynnec

That was sarcasm. I really should've noted that since it doesn't really translate well in text.

Ohhhh, I see now. I read "other," and figured you were talking about some other writer, but it was actually just a typo. I gotcha.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: You'll Rue The Day

The Career Tribune camp has successfully been destroyed... but at a price. Katniss is now deaf in her left ear and has a loud ringing in her right. She's possibly all suffering the effects of a concussion from being blown back by the force of the explosion. Even in this state she has to make run for it as Cato's party quickly returns.

The rest of the chapter is basically Katniss facing mixed emotions. On one hand she's succeed in taking just about everything away from the Careers. On the other hand her success has completely done in her most important senses. Also heavy on her mind is that Rue didn't complete the distraction. You see they had set up three fires but only two were lit.

Afraid something might have happened, Katniss sets out to find the third bonfire. She does so only to see it was never lit, and Rue is nowhere to be found. Rue is caught in a net set up by the surviving boy from District 1. Katniss finds the net and releases Rue... only to see Rue get impaled by a spear thrown by the District One boy right in front of her.

Avaitor warned me I'd be pissed off by the way Collins abruptly kills off Rue and I admit its a bit... convenient. Like... well that's one less character I have to develop. Tsk Tsk Tsk.

Is it different/better in the movie?

Another spork I read also commented on how convienient Rue's death was and went in-depth as to how, and how her character was basically set up to get "stuffed into the fridge" as it were.

She also commented that most of the "good" women of the book are just motivators for Katniss, saying  "all the women in this book are either victims, evil, or Katniss". With all of this, it's really puzzling how people are calling this book "feminist" just because Katniss happens to be "strong".

Avaitor

I just really hate how Rue's death was handled in the book. I haven't seen the movie to compare, but how Spielberg detesters feel that ET is the very example of audience manipulation, this is how I interpret it.
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

Rue's death was handled well in the movie, but it still happens WAY too fast. Like you could tell she's rushing the games as fast as possible.

She's actually the weakest character in the story. Yes, even weaker than Peeta. Katniss has basically been handed everything so far, the only exception was surviving the fire.

Rynnec

Yeah, it's pretty srange. I mean, I see people going on about how "strong" Katniss is, and how she has to work for her goals, but from what I'm reading, I just don't see it. And personality wise, she seems pretty boring to me. Yeah I suppose she's better than Bella Swan, but so is every other female character in everything ever. What makes Katniss so special?

She's a beautiful strong woman who don't need no man.
Yep, she's about as well written as the Bride from Kill Bill.

Eh, even the Bride's more well-written when you get down to it.

Mostly because the Bride doesn't need to be well-written... Kill Bill is an action movie in homage to violent Asian flicks. Hunger Games is supposed to be "deep" or something.

Yeah, The Hunger Games is trying to show us the brutality of violence by showing how cool it is.
