Leia being Luke's sister was hinted at in Empire. Before Luke goes after Vader toward the end of that movie, Obi-Wan says that Luke is their last hope, and Yoda responds to that with "There is another".

I always thought that line was referring to Anakin fulfilling the prophecy, the "hope" being he somehow realizes the error of his ways and makes things right by destroying Palpatine and the empire, which is essentially what happened in the end.

Yeah, sorry Talonmalon333, by his own admission, Lucas had no idea Leia was Luke's sister when ESB was filmed.  She retroactively became the 'another.'

Another fun bit of Star Wars trivia from back in the day...Dave Prowse, who played Darth Vader's body, was kind of a big-mouth, so they gave him fake lines to speak so he would not leak plot secrets.  He had no idea he was Luke's father until he went to Empire Strikes Back and heard James Earl Jones tell him so. In fact, poor Dave had no idea he was going to be dubbed over until he saw the first Star Wars movie in the theater. And he was given the choice of playing Chewbacca or Darth Vader, and he chose Vader because he wanted his face to show in the movie and knew Chewie would be wearing a mask. All in all, Star Wars must have left him feeling pretty cheesed off.

I grew up a total Star Wars geek in the 70's and 80's, I know all sorts of fun things like this from when every little bit of information was hot news.

When did Lucas admit this?

Way back when ROTJ was in (or recently out of) the theaters. George Lucas said it in an interview, though I can no longer say where the interview was. We obsessively read and re-read every magazine interview and newspaper we could get our hands on as kids.

Couldn't find confirmation online, but this interesting article in the Star Wars wikia claims that according to Gary Kurtz, Luke's sister (not Leia) originally was planned to appear in Episode 8. (It also claims that the 'another' was just something Lucas pulled out of his butt.) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sequel_trilogy
The wiki does say that the page needs citations to confirm the info, though.

That's a particularly interesting article for me because I remember Lucas originally stating there would be 9 films, then after the prequel trilogy he claimed he had never said such a thing.  Ha!
