That's right. The Cowboy Bebop staff is reuniting for another sci-fi anime.
Just had to say it again to make sure you were paying attention.
QuoteThey want Space Dandy to feel like old-school sci-fi but modern and new at the same time.
QuoteThey're trying to make Space Dandy as epic as possible that it surprises everyone watching it.
QuoteThe premise is that Dandy and crew are alien hunters.
QuoteIt's set far in the future and looking for aliens that no one has ever seen.
QuoteThere's going to be new space aliens every week. They already have 100 designs.

My tepid soul has been lit aflame by the sheer brilliance of that spectacle! The appealing, funky jazz beat. The luscious, beautiful animation and intriguing, gloriously fantastic character designs. A combination exceeding the coolness of any anime, nay, any series to come about since the end of Bebop itself. True funky fun has once again returned to show those moe-shit retards what good anime is all about. Dandy, Space Dandy, is a bright spot in this cold, homogenous anime industry and will no doubt set the world afire as it graces us with it's presence on television and computer screens. IT IS THE SECOND COMMING OF BEBOP! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :shakeshakeshake::swoon: :swoon: :swoon: :swoon: :swoon: :shakeshakeshake:

Watanabe is directing, Nobumoto and Sato are writing. I'm not sure if Kanno is doing the music, but it sounds really good and jazzy regardless.
YESSSSS! I've been waiting for his next project.
Thought I'd give this a post here since the talk about Space Dandy earlier..

I did a check to see if the .us and .jp domains were in operation yet. No dice.
Watanabe had another panel today! Here are more details on Space Dandy, once again courtesy of http://twitter.com/linkington:
QuoteSpace Dandy was influenced by even older sci fi anime and movies like Tron and Forbidden Planet.
Quote"Bebop was 80% serious, 20% comedy. Space Dandy is the opposite."
QuoteSpace Dandy will have 20 artists working on the music. Ask for 3-4 songs per artist too. That's a lot of music.
QuoteNo instruments invented after 1984 for his musicians!
Quote"The latest audio technology is cassettes. MP3s and CDs do not exist."
QuoteDandy isn't the protagonist's nickname. It's his real name.
QuoteDandy is the biggest dude in the universe. He doesn't worry about the small details.
Quote"When we live our lives, we worry about the smallest things. But when something bad happens to Dandy, he forgets about it immediately."
QuoteSpace Dandy doesn't have a single normal dude in its cast of characters.
Quote"QT is a very dumb piece of crap robot. He's scrap metal."
QuoteDandy was looking for a capable robot I in the shop, but QT is a glorified Roomba
QuoteMeow is very lazy. "He's spends all of his time on Twitter on his iPhone."
QuoteThe show is about this trio and they are alien hunters. An epic tale of alien hunters.
QuoteThe characters ride their spaceship Aloha Oe every week to a new planet. A different planet every week.
QuoteThis means there will be brand new aliens every week.
QuoteWatanabe was worried about the different aliens all looking too similar, so every planet's aliens have a different designer.
QuoteHe told every designer to think of the aliens of their wildest dreams.
QuoteThey have over 100 aliens, so Watanabe jokingly said they could run for over 100 episodes if it's popular.
QuoteThe alien designers are all secrets and they will be announced episode by episode.
QuotePhilip K. Dick and James Tiptree are two of Watanabe's influences on Space Dandy.
QuoteWatanabe is hopeful that the broadcast of Space Dandy in America will start shortly after the one on Japan.

That was awesome!!!!
Like most modern anime, Space Dandy will be simulcasted in Japan and North America.
Unlike most modern anime, it's going to be simulcasted on Cartoon Network. http://space-dandy.com/blog/?p=153 (The website, I assume.)
I assume by Cartoon Network, they specifically mean on [adult swim]'s video section. That is awesome, and I hope to god that means that it'll be a shoo-in for a tv broadcast on Toonami before next year is finished. With Cartoon Network/[adult swim] showing this much interest in the show so early on, I can only hope for great things to come from it....
And if I'm reading this right, the simulcast will be an English dub... http://animeanime.jp/article/2013/10/25/16058.html
Crazy. Hope they get Steve Blum or Patrick Seitz as Dandy.
Funimation is apparently in charge of the dub, according to that article, so Seitz is more likely. I'd definitely be down with that.
It's not just being simulcast, it's actually running on TV in the US this January.

Meh. The animation was pretty, but none of it was really funny, and since this is looking like a show with no actual plot whatsoever, I think I'll just give it one or two more episodes before I drop it.
I thought it was fantastic in all aspects.
I dug it. I think it's a fun throwback to old-school anime, and got some laughs out of me already.
The only joke that really made me laugh was the ending. Otherwise, I liked it.

I thought the whole thing was quite funny, but I only actually laughed at the ending and "I don't read circle." IMO, this is as good of a throwback to old anime as Kill la Kill is an homage to old manga. I've watched the last part of the episode 3 times. I'm already hooked. Can't wait to buy the OST(s) as well.
I saw it and found it to be pretty entertaining. As usual FUNimation brings top-notch voice-acting to the table, which really helped some of the more lackluster bits of humor seem funnier than they really were. As far as the humor and over-the-top meta tone of this series go, it REALLY reminds me of Level E, which for me is a good thing.
Based on the first episode, I don't exactly think it'll be an instant classic in the vein of Bebop, but to be fair it's not supposed to be. As an anime comedy, it's not laugh-out-loud funny, but it's rightfully more entertaining than most comedic anime that I've tried to watch in the past few years.
Wow. Reading the comments here and at TZ, it's quite a disconnect.
TZ is usually the more forgiving forum with new cartoons. :D

I don't really know if we're more forgiving, I think it's just a polarizing show. Space Dandy seems to me like it's mostly going to appeal to people who like silly adventure anime from the 70's-90's, which I'm not sure much of TZ's audience falls into. I believe there's a similar case with Kill la Kill, which people on this forum generally like/love, but most TZers I've encountered don't appear to care for.
First episode was interesting. The only part that threw me off was me expecting Honey to call Dandy an ass when Dandy asked her what he thought he job was. Apparently, according to someone that worked on the show, it was supposed to help establish the fact that the women working at "BOOBIES" are pretending to be dumb/ditzy, considering that Honey is most likely going to be a reoccurring character, she was listed with the rest of the cast.
I feel like I'll be watching more of this show in the near future. Also, saw an ad on Adult Swim that said what the next episode is going to be about. Haven't seen that for a Toonami show on Adult Swim.
In all honestly, I think it was more split down the middle at TZ. Only a few of us didn't really care for it. I saw plenty of praise in the talkback.

:joy:
I'm really glad to see the series draw excellent numbers. The drop between it and The Boondocks that week was only a little over 100,000. I'm hoping that it's audience will continue to grow as it continues.
Here's 1600 words on why I think this show is intelligent. I probably have no credibility left now. http://animationrevelation.com/readables/?p=2494
Episode 4 ratings: 1.251 million (http://toonamifaithful.com/toonami-ratings-for-january-25th-2013)
Not as good as last week, but still impressive that this show consistently pulls in the million+.
Well, at 11:30, it should. If it wasn't then there'd be a problem. Anyways, these are pretty good ratings. One thing to remember is that Dandy's performance is also dependent on how well it's lead in (aka Boondocks) did. I'm assuming Dandy's retention was just fine and that last saturday was a weak night for [adult swim] in general.
Usually Toonami performs weakly if there's a big sporting event that night or a key movie in the demo which came out that week. I haven't been paying attention to the ratings lately so idk what was up this Saturday.
I finally got around to seeing this episode, and I really liked it! I thought the last couple were okay at best, but I cracked up a lot when the second half came into fruition.
The rest of the block actually performed better than the week previous, so it wasn't that bad a night.Something must have drawn viewers away from the first few hous of [as] that night.
But yeah, last weeks episode was easily the funniest so far, and a great zombie parody/social satire. Pretty much everything I was hoping for after seeing clips from it on the first Dandy promos last month. Tomorrow's episode, in contrast , looks to be... serious. We'll see about that, of course, but I'm pretty interested in it (seeing as how the promo for it is so good, it's hard not to be).
Episode 5 is basically the closest we'll ever get to a Cowboy Bebop sequel. I loved it!
That was the first time I saw the show live since the premiere, and yeah, that was good.
Quote from: Foggle on February 02, 2014, 02:47:39 AM
Episode 5 is basically the closest we'll ever get to a Cowboy Bebop sequel. I loved it!
I agree. Though the episode was
very predictable in terms of it's story (c'mon, who didn't see that ending coming?), it was so well done and executed it managed to be really fun to watch and effectively emotional. I also have to say I loved seeing the selfless side of Dandy. It's nice to see he has a but more layers to him than the booby obsessed jerk of the last 4 episodes. The episode really did feel like more of a
Bebop episode in tone, though of course Dandy's antics as a stuffed penguin were more in line with the shows established sense of humor, which worked out great in the climax. I'm not gonna lie, as much as I enjoyed the last few episodes, I hope there are more episodes like this one left in the show as well. Though, next week's episode looks to be quite humorous, so I won't mind waiting a bit. :D
I'm sure there'll be at least one or two more episodes like this one. While I loved the beautiful animation of the first three installments, I thought the writing and directing were very strong in 4 and 5. If we can get some episodes that combine the best parts of both, this will probably end up becoming one of my all time favorites.
It definitely feels like the show is settling into a groove. Then again, Cowboy Bebop really started knocking it out of the park with the 4th and 5th episodes, so that's not much of a surprise.
Episode 5 ratings: 1.357 million (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/tvratings/39805/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-of-january-27-2014)
Pretty good numbers. I'm happy to see that episode got higher ratings than last week and is close to the series' current high, and I'm intrigued by the drop-off that happened between it and Bleach afterwards. In any case, Dandy's been performing consistently well, though I'm still hoping it'll manage to beat it's Boondocks re-run lead-ins at some point.
Interestingly, last Saturday's episode got nearly as much 18-49 adult ratings (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/02/04/saturday-cable-ratings-college-basketball-wins-night-the-gabby-douglas-story-mythbusters-sanjay-craig-more/234550) as the 10:30pm Family Guy and in fact beat those of the 10pm Family Guy. Admittedly, Family Guy was weaker that night for some reason, but it's good to see Dandy nonetheless stand on par with it in the core adult ratings. I think this bodes very well for the show's future, as well as the possibility of Toonami taking the 11pm timeslot sometime later this year.
Wasn't impressed by this week's episode at all. The humor just wasn't there and the art/animation felt unfinished at times, plus the reused music didn't help. The very first and very last parts of it were decent, but overall I can safely say that this is the first installment I've disliked.
Yeah, this one was pretty subpar. The ending was cool, but aside from that the concept was kinda squandered and the aliens' broken english became obnoxious after a while. Hopefully next week's episode will be funnier.
I liked everything before the aliens were introduced and after they died. I think they really brought down the episode. The red one wanting to sleep on a heart-shaped bed with Dandy was chuckle-worthy, though.
Dai Sato's scripts haven't been so good on this series. The other episode he wrote, the second one, was also pretty weak IMO, though it was saved by the action and trippy scenes (and, of course, the music). This feels more like the Sato who wrote Tekken Blood Vengeance and Resident Evil Revelations than the Sato who writes episodes of anime.
The beginning didn't leave much of an impression on me, but I do agree that the aliens weren't very funny. They were basically Dorry and Broggy from One Piece, except not badass and sounded like they were members of Jar Jar Binks' race. I did get a chuckle from the when they were hesitantly exchanging their garments, though. That was so awkward that it became legitimately amusing for me. Otherwise most of the comedy with them was a wash, and something I'd have expected more from a lesser [adult swim] original than Dandy.
I'm not familiar with Dai Sato's work, but I assume he has written good, funny episodes in other anime? Hopefully he writes a better episode later on (if he has any).

I actually really liked this week's episode. I know I'm the only one, but I enjoyed its art/animation and music (when it wasn't that annoying Smurf-esque shit) a great deal.
That was kinda trippy. I dug it.
The little kid sounding plant annoyed the fudge out of me. I hate that kind of stock character in these kind of artsy stuff that just spouts a bunch of repetitive stuff and you're supposed to feel sorry for it when it dies.
But, uh, there were a lot of cool visuals and scenes in the episode, so I can't say I hated it. It did feel slow and kinda boring to watch, though. I'm not really sure what they wanted us to get out of a lot of it too. It was a good concept, but in it's execution it felt less interesting to me than I think it should have.
The next episode looks to be focused on Meow. Since he hasn't done much so far except being stupid, I hope we learn a bit more about him and see some more layers to him like with Dandy in episode 5.

Quote- Masaaki Yuasa is not only directing, but also doing animation direction for ep 16.
- Ep 18 is solo key animated by Kiyotaka Oshiyama.
- Ep 23 is written by Keiko Nobumoto, featuring designs by Katsuhiro Otomo with animation direction by Yoshimichi Kameda (source is not 100% sure about this).
- Ep 25 is solo key animated by Michio Mihara and it's a low budget episode with only 2800 drawings, because they used too much money on the previous episodes and the finale.
- Final episode is described as "full force of great animators going on rampage" and it's in production now.
I am very excited for Otomo's episode, as well as that final episode which will no doubt be totally crazy awesome.
But wow, episode 25 is only 2800 drawings? That's less than a really low-budget episode of a Toei series. I wonder how they'll make use of their limitations with that episode.
It seems like Space Dandy is a flop in Japan (https://twitter.com/somekindofthing/status/482204786154934272). That's a shame, but I think most of Watanabe's works are better received in the west than in their home country anyway.

It was always going to flop in Japan. My theory is that Cartoon Network has been providing most of the funding for the show, and its success over here is why it's getting a second season.
For the record, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo both did better in the West than in Japan, so this is no surprise. Japan just doesn't seem of care much for the mix of Western-influenced action shows with some traditional Japanese elements in a very stylish sort of blend. Hell, the Trigun anime was also more popular here than in Japan (I can't speak for the manga, though, since I don't know how successful it was or wasn't in Japan).
Don't quote me on this, but I think I remember reading that the Trigun manga was actually quite popular in Japan, which is why it got an anime in the first place.
Yeah, I heard that the manga was fairly popular in Japan as well even though the anime adaption wasn't. I think one of the reasons the movie was made was because the manga was ending soon and so a lot of hype was there for more Trigun, in addition to the anime's long-standing international popularity.
Summaries for episodes 14-16: (http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1s29gmo)
Quote14 - "I Can't Be the Only One, Baby"
There's a Dandy in every universe, and Space Dandy is about to meet them all! He just needs to pull the nearest Cosmic String, and he'll find himself face-to-face with himself.
15 - "There's Music in Darkness, Baby"
After a big fight with QT and Meow, Dandy is lured to the distant planet of an extremely rare, ukulele-playing alien that wants to turn him into a statue - and steal his smile forever!
16 - "Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Baby"
Thanks to a nifty, handheld teleportation device, Dandy and Meow get mixed up with a fishy little alien whose planet is teetering on the brink of obliteration!
Thoughts on the season premiere?
Episode 14 ratings: 802,000 (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/07/09/saturday-cable-ratings-world-cup-soccer-wins-day-ufc-sex-sent-me-to-the-er-nascar-more/280338/)
4th of July weekend really took a toll on the ratings that night.
Episode 15 ratings: 827,000 (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-july-7-2014/)
Toonami's had two weak nights in a row, but it's a shame that Dandy isn't cracking even a million with these episodes. Hopefully the block will bounce back soon and Dandy's ratings will see a rise.
Episode 16 ratings: 805,000 (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-july-14-2014)
Man, this show is suffering at 12:30.
Ratings for the block are down in general. We've seen the ratings go into a few week slumps like this occasionally, and eventually they rebound. I'm sure this will too, at some point.
Episode 17 ratings: 750,000 (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-july-21-2014/)
...To be fair, it was a really bad night not just for Toonami, but [as] in general. But yeah, not liking this downward trend...
wait, how many years has the trigun manga been running?

wait, how many years has the trigun manga been running?
I'm not sure what that has to do with
Space Dandy, but the
Trigun manga ran from 1996-2008. Note that when the manga was transferred to a seinin magazine it was renamed
Trigun Maximum, which is regarded as a sequel/separate series, but really, it's the same dang manga and a direct continuation of the story. The anime borrows elements from all of
Trigun and the first three volumes of
Maximum, although it significantly changed much of the material in order to tell a self-contained story.
because you mentioned trigun a few pages back. i assumed the series ended in like the 90s or something until you mentioned the manga got popular enough to warrant the recent movie.
Finally, the Gogol Empire does stuff! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZCtHlouZJs)
Episode 18 ratings: 857,000 (http://toonamifaithful.com/toonami-ratings-for-august-2nd-2014)
These are the best ratings season 2 has had so far.
...and they're still pretty terrible.
Interesting... (http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2014/08/05-1/feature-bones-15th-anniversary-panel-at-animagic)
Quote[Masahiko Minami] announced that BONES will release 3 adaptations as well as one original show in 2015 as well as expressing his wish to produce a Space Dandy movie should the TV series become a success.
Episode 19 ratings: 931,000 (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-august-4-2014)
It's getting better...
Family Guy really works wonders for Toonami's ratings.
Episode 20 ratings: 873,000 (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-august-11-2014/)
A step down, especially since Titan cracked 1.4 million and Bleach retained 1.1 million...
Has another season been confirmed yet? Because if not, it's safe to assume that Dandy's done.
I don't think it was ever planned to last beyond two cours, anyway, so it's not really that big a deal. Especially since it's guaranteed to rerun since [as] co-funded it.
Well, I've been catching up on the show, and damn, what is up with the high school episode?
I think... I think that I kind of love it, actually.
Yeah, I liked the second half of that episode quite a bit, myself. Though, last week's episode is my favorite of this season so far.
Well... This episode got darker than usual.
This show really is a unique trip. I may not love each episode, but there's little else like it.
Episode 21 ratings: 1.021 million (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/adult-swim-ratings-scorecard-week-august-18-2014)
Now THAT'S more like it!
Was not expecting the show to crack into the millions during the Simpsons marathon.
FXX is not in as many homes as Cartoon Network is, anyway. But The Simpsons marathon still beat Toonami in most demo ratings.
I'm happy to see the show finally break a million again. Hopefully it can do it a few more times before it ends as well.
Episode 22 ratings: 1.138 million (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/forum/reply/221515/).
Also, the Attack on Titan marathon did extremely well. Last saturday was the best ratings Toonami's had in weeks.
Episode 24 ratings: 1.036 million. (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/forum/topic/saturday-91314/#post-222920)
Here's a nine minute preview of the second Space Dandy OST, "Boobies Wonderland." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN0fIqeh4Jg#t=17)
We somehow missed the episode 23 ratings. :thinkin:
Well, here it is late: 919,000
And the episode 25 ratings: 1.045 million (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/forum/topic/saturday-92014/page/3/#post-224072)
That finale was the hypest shit. Amazing episode, amazing show. Please make the Space Dandy movie, Bones.
Yeah, the finale was awesome. Probably now among my favorite anime finales ever. I really am going to miss the hell out of this show. There was just nothing else like it, and there probably won't be a long time. Well, unless they make the movie, which I really hope they do.
Unfortunately, since Watanabe just had two series air in a single year, we probably won't see another anime from him until at least 2020. :'(

This depresses me. :imnothappy:
That was beautiful.
Finale ratings: 1.033 million (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/saturday-final-ratings-48-hours-viewed-notre-dame-syracuse-tops-among-adults-18-49)
Ratings tally for season 2:
Episode 22: 1.138 million
Episode 25: 1.045 million
Episode 24: 1.036 million
Episode 26: 1.033 million
Episode 21: 1.021 million
Episode 19: 931,000
Episode 23: 919,000
Episode 20: 873,000
Episode 18: 857,000
Episode 15: 827,000
Episode 16: 805,000
Episode 14: 802,000
Episode 17: 750,000
Adult Swim made a huge mistake airing this at 12:30. Jesus... It only cracked a million after they put Family Guy on before Toonami, and the best ratings were (no surprise) when it was on at 11:30 during the Attack on Titan marathon.
As usual, I blame Bleach.
Season 1 releases February 2015. (http://www.funimation.com/blog/2014/11/17/live-out-your-wildest-fantasies-with-these-space-dandy-premium-edition-releases)
Unfortunately, we'll be paying Aniplex-level prices (http://shop.funimation.com/Season-One-FUNimation-Exclusive) for them.

There will probably be a cheaper standard edition, too.

Let's hope so, because even that's pretty pricy for FUNi standards.

True, but that's roughly the same price as the Attack on Titan Limited Edition if I remember correctly, and they released a standard set around the same time; it just wasn't announced until later. :)
