Title: Greatest Animated Movie Ever
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on November 09, 2013, 11:09:41 AM
I'll try and leave each of these up for at least a few days to give people sufficient time to watch these movies. If it looks like everybody has voted on both matches, however, then I'll just move on immediately.

Round 1:

Animaniacs! Wakko's Wish

My Picks:

Match 1:

I'm holding off, here, to at least check out some of Ranma 1/2 before laying down my final verdict.

Match 2:

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker- IMO, it's the best animated Batman movie that I have seen, or at the very least ties for me with MOTP as 2 of my favorite Batman movies ever. Yes, I'm biased. I like these movies even more than Nolan's films (which I am a fan of, BTW).

The Adventures of Tintin- This is one of the best, most entertaining adventure films that I've seen in a long time, in general.

Animaniacs! Wakko's Wish- It may be the nostalgia-goggled talking here, but I got a ton of laughs out of this one as a kid.

Paprika- Look, I respect Satoshi Kon, and all, but I've always had a hard time getting into the guy's work, and this movie is no exception for me. Sorry, but I think Tokyo Godfathers might be the only one I enjoyed (and even then, I haven't seen that in a while, so I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it on a re-watch).

Oh wow! I can vote on both of these matches without having to see any additional movies!  ;D

Match 1:

The Incredibles - While I know the film isn't too popular around here, I really do consider it to be one of Pixar's finest. A lot of that boils down to it's the dynamic between the Parr family and their internal problems, and Bob's desire to get more out of his life, which, to me, made it THE most "human" film Pixar had done up until that point. Re-watching it again recently, these elements, plus the darker aspects of the film (and how fucked up a character Syndrome is), really do make it deserve the amount of praise it's gotten after all these years, and while it's not my favorite Pixar film, it's still one that I love incredibly.

The Jungle Book - While not a perfect film by any means, I don't think it's a stretch to say that The Jungle Book was possibly the single animated movie that inspired my love for animation. A lot of that does have to do with the story, with Mowgli's dilemma of finding where he fits in, a relatable problem, as well as his endearing relationship with Baloo. Something about the film, in nearly all it's scenes, be it the "You wanna be like me" sequence at King Louie's or the final, tense showdown with Shere Khan, has always captivated me in a way that few other animated films did as a kid and do now. While not the best film in Disney canon, nor my favorite, anymore, it's still one that I hold close to my heart, and was an important piece in developing my growing love for animation.

Lilo and Stitch - Really, just another good movie by Disney. Of note is how real Lilo feels as an actual child, how Nani is always a protective and supportive guardian but in a believable way. Those parts of the film are probably the strongest elements of it, but Lilo's relationship with Stitch is no less essential to the central theme of family in the film. While I can't say everything about this movie still holds up for me, I do think it was one of the more inventive films Disney has done, and alongside Emperor's New Groove a triumph of their animation department in the 00's.

Ranma 1/2: Nihao, My Concubine - Just so you know, E-K, this is a film that'll be more enjoyable to you if you know these characters and this world well. Not to say I don't think there's no fun to be had in it without prior knowledge, but my favorite parts of the movie, personally, come from seeing Mousse and Ryoga really kick some ass despite their normally pathetic losing streaks/lives. That's some real satisfaction, there. Otherwise, it was a nice movie, but one that's definitely going to be more fun if you are already a fan of the show. Otherwise, it's just a decent shonen-movie, nothing special. I'm not sure whether I like this film or the first Ranma movie more, since the core plot (Akane gets kidnapped, everyone goes to rescue her) is the exact same thing and the difference is in the antagonists behavior/underlying motives and which characters get moments of awesome. So...yeah, while I love me some Ranma, this movie is just an okay time-passer and easily the weakest link this match, and I really only nominated it because GSF nominated DBZ movies which all suck, imo, and at least this movie is fun to watch and not an obnoxious and mindless action-fest. If you don't get a great first impression of the series from this movie, you should think of it like how you might not get a good impression of One Piece if you had only seen "Desert Princess" before, or whatever; the series is much, much better, and the movie is just a nice compliment to it.

Match 2

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker - Y'know how as a kid I thought superheroes were the dumbest thing in the world and looked down on them and action cartoons in general? Yeaaahhhh, this movie single-handedly changed that, because even as a kid I could recognize it was a character-driven film with moral and psychological complexity, which impressed me since I didn't think children's entertainments respected kids enough to give us that. My enjoyment of this movie has not lessened over the years, though I personally find Mask of the Phantasm the stronger film (and this isn't a biased opinion, I only saw that movie for the first time last year). It's easily one of the best parts of the entire DCAU, and a treat of a movie even if watched standalone. An easy first for me, this match.

The Adventures of Tintin - As a long-time Tintin fan I was overjoyed by the excellency of this movie. A great adaption of some of the storylines of the source material, with even greater animation and directing. That chaotic chase sequence in Bagghar is up there as one of my all time favorite scenes in animation and film in general. You done good, Speilberg, you done good, and I eagerly await a sequel.

Paprika - Well I liked it, E-K.  :bleh: Granted, I'm a sucker for these sorts of movies in general, but it was well-made and well-directed film, though not a top favorite of mine. This is actually the only Satoshi Kon film I've actually seen, which reminds me I have to watch his other films for this competition, plus Paranoia Agent at some point as well.

Wakko's Wish - It's a fun movie, and I've always enjoyed it myself. But compared to all these other films, it's an easy fourth, honestly.

So, I watched about 20 minutes of Ranma 1/2, and yeah, I think I'd have to watch the series first in order to appreciate this one properly. Anyways, here's my order for match 1:

The Jungle Book
Lilo and Stitch
The Incredibles
Ranma 1/2

The Incredibles
Lilo & Stitch
The Jungle Book
Ranma 1/2

Paprika
The Adventures of Tintin: I thought the movie captured the spirit of Herg?'s comics very well.
Return of the Joker: while I have a slight preference for Mask of The Phantasm, this movie really shows the DCAU Joker at his most evil and was a great send-off (in-universe) for the character.
Wakko's Wish

I'm going to skip the second match for now, until I see Paprika and Tintin. I can do the first match though!

I was actually going to go into detail with my choices, but I'll just make it easier and say that I'll second Pharass. I don't feel too bad about not having seen the Ranma movie, since the word seems to be that it won't appeal as much if you're not familiar with the characters, and even those who like the franchise put it at fourth.

Like, let's be honest here, I'm the only one on this board who is genuinely a fan of Ranma.

I thought that Desensitized liked Ranma 1/2 as well, or maybe that was another Rumiko Takahashi series.

Honestly, though, I have to admit to being a bit biased just because of Inu-Yasha, which I personally can't stand. That said, I haven't really seen any of her other series, so I can't judge those fairly.
Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on November 10, 2013, 01:43:24 PM
He said he only likes her pre-Ranma work, so I'm guessing he doesn't like it.  :P

I actually really enjoy InuYasha, and this is from the perspective of someone who hated it as a kid. Reading the manga, the story and characters, while nothing spectacular, are leagues more likable and enjoyable than Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail, and series less maligned than it. It's biggest problem is it's pacing, which is super, super slow and exacerbates the problems people had with it more than would have if it was maybe half the length. This is not to say arcs drag on, cause actually the series is more composed of multiple short arcs that tie into the larger plot, but it takes a long while to get character development for many of the characters after a certain point until near the end of the series, and that probably makes the experience tedious for people if they read it slowly. I read it chunks of volumes at a time over a six-month time-span, so obviously I was able to absorb the story quickly and not get bothered by those issues, but no doubt people who were reading it weekly or by the volume as it came out were annoyed. At it's core though, I really do think the story and characters are fine and Sesshomaru is actually one of my favorite characters in any manga (and the best stoic-type character I've seen in any one as well), but it's pacing really kills it from being a great series, objectively. I do think The Final Act turned out quite well, since it saved the core of the story while removing the fillery and poorly paced elements of the manga (condensing the Moryomaru saga from 90 chapters into 6 episodes was a great call, even if it did feel too rushed for me, personally), so while I can't stand to watch the first InuYasha anime, I think that was good at least and showed my point that it really was a good story hurt by poor pacing. As far as the manga goes, I actually enjoy it slightly more than Ranma, but I don't think many people here would be able to really enjoy it very well.

Anyway, both Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, in anime or manga form, are leagues better than either Ranma or InuYasha and I'd recommend them whole-heartedly to anyone on this board. Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer is my favorite anime movie atm, and while it's best enjoyed if you are already a fan of the series, it is one of the most critically acclaimed anime films, definitely the most between those based on shonen manga, and I'd hope everyone will give it a chance whenever it appears in this competition, as well as the other Urusei Yatsura films, though your mileage may vary more with those.

So, just InuYasha and Rin-ne? At least you like 5/7ths of her major works, then.  :D

I actually have not read Rin-ne yet. I've heard mixed opinions about it, and generally the consensus seems to be it's Takahashi's weakest series. I think I'd probably like it if I read it, though, since I'm more tolerable of sitcom-y manga like it.

Pretty much. She's very talented, but her last two series follow a certain formula I'm not too keen on. It doesn't mean I don't think she'll make a good manga again later, but as of now I'm just not interested.

Alright, covered my bases for match 3. I still need to rewatch A Goofy Movie for match 4, but I can get to that one sometime tomorrow.

Match 3:

The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 - I've never read Frank Miller's acclaimed comic, but from what I can tell, this was an excellent adaption of the source material. If anything, it's grim, "realistic" take on the consequences of Batman on the society around him, his motives, what he represents, against the political climate of a still cold war america in the late 1980's is pretty damn interesting to watch. That's not to say there aren't blunders. Ronald Reagan's depiction is one of the most unsubtle representation of a shady political leader I've seen recently, yet I can't help but be amused by it as well. While I far prefer the first film, Returns Part 2 is a good conclusion, and I enjoyed it. At the very least, it does gritty and dark Batman right, which is far more than I can say for contemporary DC comics.

Batman: Gotham Knight - Like Returns above, it does dark Batman right, and I quite enjoyed the multiple stories, animated by different studios in the flick. If the film was fresher in my mind, I might've put this first this match, tbh.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - This film had such unfairly shitty promotion. Goddamn "Afro Circus" hid the fact this was actually a really good movie, by far the best Madagascar film, and loads of fun. Even if you didn't like the other Madagascar films (I downright loathed the second one, myself), this movie is easily one of the funnier Dreamworks flicks and it's a shame it's so unfairly judged thanks to those terrible "Afro Circus" trailers.

DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp - Just watched this for the first time today. I enjoyed it, I laughed, I loved the animation. And of course, "Shabooie!" That Genie character was a blast. I have to admit some disappointment, because I was expecting more...adventure, than just the first fifth of the film being one. The way it turned out made it feel more like an extended episode of the show to me. I thought it was a good movie, I'd watch it again if only for the first fifth of it and the Genie character (and of course the always entertaining Scrooge McDuck), but compared to the other films here, it didn't leave as much of an impression on me, personally.

Toy Story 3 - An excellent conclusion to the Toy Story film franchise.

Peter Pan - Another classic Disney film.

Cats Don't Dance -  Never saw this before yesterday, but I thought it was a pretty great little film and a lot of fun.

A Goofy Movie - It's an alright film, but Max came off too unlikeable for me, which killed my enjoyment of it somewhat.

Sleeping Beauty

My Picks:

Match 5:
Pass

Match 6:

One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island- Don't let the fact that it's OP fool you. This is easily the most fucked, dark, somewhat depressing, and wickedly twisted things that has ever come out of the mostly kid-friendly One Piece series, or almost any shounen, for that matter. It's also the first feature-length film from Mamoru Hosoda (of Summer Wars fame), so if that doesn't pique anyone's interest in at least checking it out, and I don't know what will.

The Nightmare Before Christmas- It's a classic Halloween and Christmas movie in one. What more could you possibly ask for?

Treasure Planet- It's "eh."

Sleeping Beauty- A classic Disney flick, to be sure, but the 1-dimensional characters don't sit too well with me, anymore, and there's only so much that good animation can do to make a movie hold up. Also, since most of you ass-holes ranked LT so low, none of you can blame me for ranking this one lower than the other two films.

Ah, fuck. Was that a week? I let Tenchi and Sleeping Beauty die...

Ah, well. At least it wasn't one of the UY movies.  :awesome:

Anyway, I can vote on both matches this round off the bat, so...

Match 7

Dumbo -Classic Disney.

Daria: Is It Fall Yet? - A great film resolving Daria and Jane's issues from the end of season 4, and a nice exploration of Quinn's character as well as she learns that she can apply herself if she chose to.

Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation - The one thing Tiny Toons that I never get tired of watching ever. Just a really funny film, imo.

Lupin the Third: In Memory of the Walther P-38 - A quite entertaining Lupin flick.

Match 8

Same as E-K, though I quite like Kiki and The Rugrats Movie.

Sorry it's been taking me so long to put up the next round, but yes, I've been having computer problems again, so just bear with me on this. I should be able to have it up by some time tonight.

In the meantime, one of you chumps could start another game thread that can be updated more frequently. Just be creative about it, like the best cartoon/anime opening themes or some shit like that. :humhumhum:

I have a particular idea in mind right now, actually. I'm waiting until my 1001th post to create it. So whenever I get through 47 more posts to that point is when I'll make another one, one that (if there's as many nominations as I'd hope), will update quickly and could very well last a good long while.  ;)

Akira

My Picks:

Match 9:
The Lion King- One of my top 3 favorite animated movies of all-time
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time- Not as good as Summer Wars or Wolf Children, but still a great movie
Shrek 2- Fun sequel
Tenchi Muyo In Love- I haven't seen it, but I was always pretty luke-warm to Tenchi

Match 10:
Akira- Not a personal favorite, but it definitely is one of the greats
Pinocchio- Sort of the same deal as Akira, here
Alice in Wonderland- Now that's some interesting mind-fuckery
Princess Mononoke- Yeah, it's no secret that I'm not exactly the biggest Miyazaki fan

Oh, and, BTW: I noticed that somehow Princess Mononoke got nominated twice, which managed to slip past me, so that leaves one spot open for a last nomination if anyone has anything else they want to add. It's basically the first one to respond to me with something.

Crap...missed my chance to get The Wind Rises or Rebellion in the competition. Oh well.

I need to watch The Girl who Lept Through Time, so I'll wait on voting for match 9. Match 10, though...

Alice in Wonderland - One of my all time favorite animated movies.

Princess Mononoke - My third favorite Miyazaki film.

Akira - Beautifully animated, action-packed, and well-directed. It's no wonder it's the most influential anime film of all time.

Pinocchio - Another great from Disney...but something had to give in this match and frankly, I've re-watched this recently and can say that right now I do prefer the other films in this match a bit more.

:EDIT:

Well, actually I CAN post new matches up if someone else wants to edit in the pictures for them. That's way too much of a pain in the ass to try and do with my iPad, but other than that I can post up the matches themselves if everyone is fine with no pictures accompanying them (at least until I can get my laptop back).

And if one of you guys would be kind enough to edit in the pictures for me in this match, that'd be appreciated.

I'll post pictures in a moment. ;) And I'm going to watch The Prince of Egypt for the first time in years soon, but as for the first match-

Frozen
Mystery of Mamo
Super Saiyan Broly
The Aristocats

Haven't seen Frozen yet but am planning to soon, and I haven't seen The Mystery of Mamo yet either, so I'll pass on Match 11 for now.

Match 12

The Emperor's New Groove - The funniest Disney movie, and one of my favorites.

The Prince of Egypt - A very underrated, but phenomenal film.

The Rescuers - A fine and fun Disney movie.

Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle - I watch this movie every year as a Halloween tradition. I always enjoy it, but I feel that it has the least to offer out of all the movies in this particular match, so I'm putting it last here.

I hope that you don't mind me using a gif for Frozen. That's just one of the most glorious bits in the movie, and it's been something Disney's been trying to do for a long time.

I finally got to see the Prince of Egypt again, so I can do this right-

The Emperor's New Groove- One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, Disney or not
The Prince of Egypt- Okay, so I was a stupid kid for not liking this. Some of the songs didn't fully click for me, but this is easily one of Dreamworks' best, and in another match can be my #1
The Rescuers- I'm on the camp who prefers Down Under, but I do find the original underrated
Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle- It's a fun one from what I remember, but easily last here

The Prince of Egypt - Their first and still their best to me
The Rescuers - Fun adventure movie that gets overlooked
The Emperor's New Groove - Surprisingly funny
Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle - Good stuff

Might I suggest that we put Match 11 on hold until more people are able to see some of the movies on here, or that at least one person who normally votes but hasn't seen Frozen yet can go see it before this round ends? It looks like we'll need to do one or the other to get more votes.

I had other plans for using my 999th post, but I guess I should vote on Match 11 so as to not stall this competition any longer, and since I have seen all the movies in it now.

Frozen - I saw this movie with Vlord on Christmas. I thought it was an excellent film, with a really refreshing story and refreshing characters, and I might dare say I liked it better than Tangled. My only complaints concern the ending, which doesn't come off right to me, and the reveal of the film's actual villain, which is good in concept, but lacking in set-up and execution. Still, this one is another great film for Disney's animation department to be proud of, and the film's visual effects and animation in combination with the story and characters makes it even more applause-worthy. And, I have to say, the songs are still stuck in my head.  ;D

The Aristocats - While not quite on par with Disney's best, this one is still an old favorite of mine.

Lupin the Third: The Mystery of Mamo - I found this one to be a little dull, but it's still entertaining Lupin goodness, and I always love hearing anything with the Geneon voice cast as the Lupin crew whenever I can.

Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan - Better than most of the DBZ movies, but even so, I like it the least out of all these.

Match 14:

The Sword in the Stone- Archimedes makes this movie for me
Tangled- A really fun modern Disney flick, though the massive hype kind of killed some of its enjoyment for me
The Simpsons' Movie- Entertaining enough, but easily the weakest movie here

One Piece: Strong World

My Picks:

Match 15:
The Dark Knight Returns Part I- I finally got around to watch this and Part II, and it's definitely one of the better DCA features
Futurama: Bender's Big Score- My favorite of the Futurama movies, and IMO on par with the quality of the original 4 seasons
End of Evangelion- Love the first half, but the rest is up its own ass "arthouse" stuff that I just can't get into
Trigun: Badlands Rumble- The pinnacle of mediocrity, it also makes some of the best anime characters boring as hell

Match 16:
Felidae- An underrated gem, IMO
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh- Because nostalgia tells me I like it
One Piece: Strong World- It's shallow compared to the manga/show, but fun, and unlike Trigun it doesn't fuck up the characters
Tarzan- I was never really a fan of this one, even as a kid

Match 15:

End of Evangelion - The Instrumentality sequence is one of my favorite scenes in any animated anything.
The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 - Interesting take on Batman and the consequences of a vigilante's actions.
Futurama: Bender's Big Score - Best of the Futurama movies.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble - I don't hate this like everybody else (in fact, I nominated it), but the other three movies are leagues better. Honestly, the movie does disappoint me in the respect that it's basically a filler story no different than your standard anime franchise film. I really wish we had gotten a Maximum anime instead. Maybe someday....

Match 16:

Felidae - Vastly underrated.
Tarzan - Why does everybody here seem to hate this?
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Nostalgia! But really, it's a good family movie and I still find it entertaining even as an adult.
One Piece: Strong World - More impressive than most anime franchise films, especially shonen franchise films, and definitely worth having on blu ray. But I still think it's the weakest film this match though. And you know how much I love One Piece...

Match 17

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal - Excellent adaption of the Remembrance arc.

Aladdin - Solid Disney flick.

The Powerpuff Girls Move - Maybe it was a little too dark for PPG, but I think it was a good film overall.

Dragon Ball: The Path to Power - What Dragon Ball: Evolution should've been in terms of plot.

Match 18

WALL-E - One of Pixar's best, and one of the best animated movies period.

The Secret of Nimh -  Something this fantastic shouldn't be so underrated.

The Secret World of Arriety - Though not as impressive as others, it's another good movie from Miyazaki.

Case Closed: Countdown to Heaven - The first of only two Conan movies where the Black Organization appears! It's good, but I wouldn't put it above the other three in this match myself,  though the Haibara-focus in this movie does tempt my bias.

I need to see First Contact before I vote on Match 19.

As for Match 20:

Spirited Away - My second favorite Miyazaki film.

Toy Story - All the Toy Story movies are excellent and favorites of mine.

The Little Mermaid - I actually don't particularly care for it, but the songs are awesome and I certainly respect it for helping bring Disney animated features back to form in the 90's. I'll let a smidgen of nostalgia push this over Cinderella here.

Cinderella - I've rewatched it recently, and I still think it's great, even a bit underrated. That said, it's less memorable than The Little Mermaid for me, so I'll have to put it last.

My Picks:

Match 22:
The Iron Giant- A classic
Finding Nemo- Kind of overrated by Pixar fans, IMO, but still good
Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths- It has some good moments, but is pretty average compared to better DCAU films
A Bug's Life- I actually kind of enjoy this one more than most people do, but it's definitely the weakest film here

And, BTW, my computer isn't working again, so I'll need one of you gentlemen to post up the pictures for me in these matches.

I need to watch Mind Game and The Princess and the Frog before I vote on Match 21.

As for Match 22:

The Iron Giant - Fantastic.

Finding Nemo - Another one of my favorite Pixar movies. I make sure to watch this at least once every year, and each time I find myself liking it better and better.

A Bug's Life - I'm meh on the characters and the plot is something I've gotten tired of over the years. It's by no means a bad movie, and I do still enjoy parts of it, but it's honestly my least favorite Pixar movie that I've seen.

Justice League: Crises on Two Earths - It's alright, but not one of the better DCU animated films in my opinion.

Justice League A Crisis On Two Earths - My favorite recent DC movie.

Finding Nemo - Are they seriously making a sequel? The Incredibles 2 is practically free money, you know...

A Bug's Life

Iron Giant

Match 21-

The Princess and the Frog (I think this one's rather underrated. While there are some pacing issues and not every song works, there's just more heart and passion to it than either Tangled or Frozen did, and I consider Tiana and Facilier are among the best Disney has to offer)
Mind Game (a hell of a trio, I don't exactly know how to take it all, but I'm glad I've seen it)
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (I tried this one out a while ago, and while I don't have much use for the show, it's a pretty good movie)
Case Closed (I'm sorry, I'll try to watch more of this soon)

Finally watched Mind Game and Princess and the Frog and re-watched The Last Wizard of the Century to boot. Hot damn, this is a hard one...

Match 21:

The Princess and the Frog - I'm going to fourth this movie being shockingly underrated and Faciller being a great villain. I wish I watched this movie way sooner than I did. Everything about it is so beautifully well-done; story, songs, animation, all of it. My god, the animation on Louis is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. A bulky design like his is hell to animate, but they accomplished it effortlessly. This movie is so goddamn full of life, even more so than a lot of other Disney movies I can recall. I might have to re-watch it a few times, but I think this one's a new favorite of mine. It's a real shame that this wasn't a hit, because with this caliber of quality, we could have been treated to some glorious traditional Disney films. It's such a shame I almost wanna cry...

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - I never cared for the Haruhi tv anime...but I was floored by how great this movie was. Maybe I have some issues at it's length, but good lord if it wasn't an engaging thrill once the plot kicked in. If only the rest of the series was on this calibur...

Mind Game - This was an excellent movie, with great, creative use of differing art/animating styles and a wonderful story with a great message on living life and not holding yourself back. I probably could've put this first in a lot of different matches, but, in this particular one, I'd say that I enjoyed this slightly less than the others, but for it's quality I'll help it move on by putting it before The Last Wizard.

Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century - The best Conan movie I've seen. An excellent, engaging mystery from start to finish that keeps getting more interesting while also keeping up some great tension. Easily the best-written of the six FUNi dubbed, imo. Of course, this movie DID have Phantom Thief Kid in it...and anything Kid related is bound to be awesome, so it's no surprise that this movie turned out so good.  :D

My Picks:

Match 25:
Snow White (Kind of archaic by today's standards, but still classic stuff)
Billy and Mandy (I haven't seen this special in ages, but I remember liking it well enough)
DBZ (Admittedly I have the TFS abridged version stuck in my head, which is the only reason it's not last in this round)
Howl (Fun Fact: This was the first every Miyazaki movie that I saw....yeah, I didn't get what all of the hype was about)

Match 26:

Turtles Forever (Personally, I like it much better than the 2007 CG movie)
Up (I tend to think Pixar is a tad overrated, but this is my favorite film that they made, so they've done good, here)
Digimon Adventure: Our War Game (While not on par with Hosoda's feature-length films, it was still great stuff for a fan)
Shrek (I like it, but it was the least memorable film for me in this match)
Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever

It took 4 months, but we're finally at the half-way point for the first round! Yay!  :)

Match 25

Billy and Mandy's Big Boogie Adventure - I love this movie so, so much. It's easily my favorite thing to come out of B&M, and I never tire of watching it. It's so dang funny to me. It's not a better film than Snow White, I suppose, but I always enjoy watching this and regularly have ever since I first saw it way back when.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - I just rewatched this on Thursday, actually, and it's pretty damn underrated. Some of the animation is dated, but mostly it's brilliantly executed with many strong scenes that make modern productions blush with how effective they are and is just greatly entertaining as a whole.

Howl's Moving Castle - This...is honestly my least favorite Miyazaki/Ghibli movie that I've seen, though I haven't watched it in a long time so I dunno how if I'd feel any different if I saw it again. I don't think it's a bad movie, by any means, though, just not as good as many others Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have done.

Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge - Ugh. Like, even as a kid, most DBZ movies did little for me and Cooler's Revenge is no exception. It's a neat idea to have the brother of Freeza come and get revenge for his death, and all, but it's basically a 50 minute excuse for fight scenes, and that is just not interesting or entertaining to me. It's better than it's sequel, though. That one makes my head hurt, especially the original english dub with that god awful rock music score that would just never, ever, stop (shudders).

Match 26

Up - I think this is Pixar's best film to date. A well written, interesting protagonist and likable sidekicks, with strong emotional bits and riotous humor. And of course, those first ten minutes are sheer perfection.

Shrek - I by far prefer Shrek 2, but the original is pretty fun and clever, though it does feel somewhat dated now.

Turtles Forever - I've never been much of a Turtles fan (just never got around to watching enough of 2K3, I'm afraid), but I quite liked this film.

Digimon: Our War Game - I really like this film too, though more for the effort of what it tried to do than as a story overall. I think it's most interesting to me in seeing the way Hosada was able to expand on concepts and ideas he used in this film and refine them with a stronger story in Summer Wars.

Same as EK for the second match, but as for the first

The Three Caballeros (inconsistent and widely imperfect, but damn if I don't find it fun to watch, even the weaker aspects)
The Black Cauldron (more or less the same as Caballeros, but the more I read up on the book series it's inspired by, this does seem like an inferior adaptation. I still like the movie, though)
Rugrats in Paris (like most of the later episodes, there are some really stupid, gawdy parts all around, but unlike said episodes, I do think that the emotional core of the film holds up, and I still laugh here and there)
Jimmy Neutron (I haven't seen this in years, but I do remember liking it, although it took no time for me to prefer the show. Maybe I'd like it better now, maybe not, but last place seems like a good choice for the time being)

Match 27:

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius - While the show is better, the movie is still a lot of fun and an excellent complement/pilot for it.

The Three Callaberos - Uneven and all over the place, but I still find it fun.

Rugrats in Paris: The Movie - I really do think the emotional core of the film holds up strongly, though there are quite a few stupid parts, I admit. And I have to wonder why they didn't just make it "Rugrats go to Japan" considering so much is focused on japanese culture things and the setting of Paris is underutilized.

The Black Cauldron - It's alright, but one of Disney's weakest efforts, at least for me.

Match 28:

Beauty and the Beast - I think it's fantastic, even if it's not one of my most favorite Disney movies.

Coraline - Stop-motion animation at it's finest (and creepiest).

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie - Always solid entertainment for me. It's a simple, but fun film with lots of good humor and it would have made a great ending to the series.

Mulan - I like it, but not more than the others.

Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on April 13, 2014, 12:32:28 PM
The fact that I haven't already posted it means that I obviously haven't had the means to post up the next match. All of my data for each match is saved on my computer. The very same computer that you already know to be plagued with issues. It just so happens that it crashed again and I don't have the time to fix it until this rotation is over in 2 weeks. I'm not going to take the time to fix it until then because I have a life and priorities. So there's your answer. Now stop asking me about it all the time.

EK, would you want me to take care of the next match for you?
Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on April 15, 2014, 09:02:58 PM
My problem is that I have a list of randomized entries set into specific match brackets saved on my computer. Since I can't even get the computer to start up properly right now, I can't access it. I kind of need that record so as not to throw everything out of whack, since there are so many entries in this competition and it's hard to keep track of it all just in your head. If you feel that you can manage to keep record of the remaining matches in this round, or at least until I get my PC fixed in 2 weeks, then by all means, take over for me.

Nothing to be sorry about. I just don't have a lot of time on my hands until a little before May. Once I get my computer fixed, I'll email the document to myself so that I don't run into this problem again.

Bad news is, it looks like my laptop is pretty much dead for good. Good news is that I can still salvage the data so that I can continue on with the rest of this thread. Just give me anther day or two. I'm going to be borrowing my brother's old laptop, and then I can continue.

Redline - 90+ minutes of sheer animated epicness.

Lady and the Tramp - I watched this movie so many times when I was a kid that eventually the tape broke down from wear.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown - Easily the best Peanuts film.

Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on December 09, 2014, 12:08:16 AM
I think that I mentioned on another thread that I've pretty much dropped this ever since my old computer crashed and I lost all of the tournament data, including the randomization of the rest of the matches. I don't have the time to physically go through pages worth of posts to re-record what has made it through, and then re-randomize everything else. If you guys still want this competition to go on, one of you can pick it up instead if you have the time and think that it's worth it, otherwise if nobody's opposed to it, I can just start it from scratch, albeit with less entries allowed than last time, as I'm not a fan of really big competitions.
Title: Re: Greatest Animated Movie Ever

Post by: gunswordfist on December 09, 2014, 12:55:35 AM
i think it would be easier to reshuffle the remaining entries instead of starting a new tournament. if i can get internet access for my laptop soon enough, i will do it myself and pm the results to whoever wants to continue this tournament. edit: i would continue this tournament myself but i will have two days max of internet this month.
