Title: Greatest Villain Tournament 2014 Edition: Nomination Thread
Post by: Pharass on March 07, 2014, 05:38:12 PM
It's been said that true evil can never be destroyed completely.
Yes, once again it's time to decide who is the best of the worst, the baddest of the bad in the annals of fictional villainy. However, before we get this show on the road, here are the rules:

Nominations will close next Saturday, I figure that should give anyone who is interested enough time.

Although this tournament is for the fictional evil-doers,fictionalized versions of historical figures, such as Shakespeare's Richard III are acceptable.

Finally: People may have different opinions regarding whether or not a character really is a villain. However, don't worry about that and just nominate your favorites.

That's all folks, the floor is yours.

List of Nominees:

I'm going to have to think on this awhile. There's a lot of them to comb through.

Only ten? Ugh, how am I going to pick and choose?  :srs:

I'm gonna need to play the waiting game and see what other ones people nominate. However, I do know one of my favorites that I know no one else will nominate that I want in this competition...

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F25.media.tumblr.com%2F5bed636409bfcc40ae03556e14c928c1%2Ftumblr_mnfwgow4LQ1r6toezo1_500.png&hash=89ad33d2c79010cd382d711e13fd9e2b5babcd4d)

Captain Battleship (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)

I'm going to have to think on my rest. I hope the max limit gets extended at some point.  :humhumhum:

GSF, I'm leaving it up to you to at least remember to nominate Vincent from Collateral and Mad Dog from Hardboiled.

True, but there was no rule set by Pharass stating otherwise. If you want, though, I'll drop him and nominate someone else in his place.

Hans Gruber (Die Hard)

I tried to spread it out. There's a lot to pick from so I went with different types from different mediums.

So, Avaitor, are you going to nominate Spike by any chance? Just because he turns good (relatively) later on doesn't negate his early days as a villain, IMO. I would've nominated him but I opted not to in order to keep my nominations more varied between series (though I had to make an exception for Breaking Bad).

Maybe, I'm still trying to decide.

Right now, I'm also trying to think if Tony Soprano would fit here or not.

Everyone's nominations reminds me how I need to read more books and watch more live-action television.  :imnothappy:

Napoleon (Animal Farm)
Captain Beaty (Farenheit 451)
Lady Macbeth (MacBeth)
Iago (Othello)
Irene Adler (Sherlock Holmes)
Professor Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes)
Yuki Michio (MW)
Midora (Toriko manga)
Matal Mogamett (Magi)

I too tried the best of my ability to diversify my choices while nominating villains I didn't think anyone else would choose. I'm half-tempted to revoke my Captain Battleship nomination for a character with a better chance...but I don't wanna cause I love the guy.  :P There are SO many more villains I still want to nominate though. I really hope the limit is extended.

Thanks homie. Like a day or two ago, I was thinking about putting Mad Dog in this contest. Whoa, this snuck up on me, thanks Pharass! Also, are you sure Montana counts? Ok, from the list I literally saved on my computer this week (plus the two ek just named):

Ragin' Lincoln Redcrow (Scalped)
Danger (Astonishing X-Men (Whedon is getting a lot of good representation here!))
Dead Larry (Burn Notice)
Simon (Burn Notice)
The Governor (The Walking Dead)
Two-Face (Batman)
The Thing (John Carpenter's Thing)
Hush (Batman comics)
Mad Dog/One Eye (Hard-Boiled)
Vincent (Collateral)

Sucks that Alfonz/so from Training Day and Saito apparently got cut off my list but I guess I'll hold out for whenever I can possibly put them on. Also, Lono if Tony Montana really counts.

Guys, I've given it some thought and I've decided to lift the ten nomination per user limit. Go nuts.
As for Johan, since he won last time, I've decided by dictatorial fiat to exclude him from this tournament.

Oh, and here are my first choices:

Judge Holden (Blood Meridian)
Colonel Bozzo (The Black Coats)
Edmund (King Lear)
Sir William Gull (From Hell)
Francis Urquhart (House of Cards Trilogy)
Steerpike (Gormenghast)
John Charity Spring (The Flashman Papers)
Nox (Wakfu)
Lady Kaede (Ran)

If any of these have already been nominated and I missed them, feel free to point it out.
How do you guys whose identity as a villain is a spoiler? I can think of a few like that I'd want to nominate, but I don't want to risk ruin it for those who are not familiar with the book/movie/etc they're from.

Guys, I've given it some thought and I've decided to lift the ten nomination per user limit. Go nuts.

Thank you kindly. I have over a hundred villains I could nominate. However, I don't want to single handedly contribute a massive amount of contenders, so I'll play the waiting game with most of them, and just nominate these twenty for now.

O'Brien (1984)
Calvin J. Candie (Django Unchained)
Edwin Epps (12 Years A Slave)
Shere Khan (The Jungle Book)
Ra's Al Ghul (DC)
Lex Luthor (DC)
Doctor Octopus (Marvel)
Doctor Doom (Marvel)
David Xanatos (Gargoyles)
V. V. Argost (The Secret Saturdays)
Masato (Mermaid Saga)
Mask of Ice (Pokemon Adventures)
Vermouth (Detective Conan)
Bourbon (Detective Conan) (NOTE: his/her identity is a spoiler, so please put his/her picture in spoiler tags in the competition.)
Legato Bluesummers (Trigun)
Legato Bluesummers (Trigun Maximum)
Zeno Bell (Zatch Bell)
Masami Eiri (Serial Experiments Lain)
Tetsuo (Akira manga)
Rezo the Red Priest (The Slayers franchise)

Legato Bluesummers (Trigun Maximum)

Correct me if I'm wrong (it's been awhile since I last watched or read any Trigun) but, aside from some differences in the story between the manga and the anime , aren't these two the same character with the same personality and goals?

Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament 2014 Edition: Nomination Thread

Legato in the anime is emotionless and calculating and only cares about the singular goal of making Vash suffer. Legato in the manga is obsessed with Knives to the point of insanity, and his raison d'etre is more to prove his loyalty and worth to Knives than making Vash suffer, though that is, for the most part, his means to that end.

Manga Legato acts completely different from anime Legato in their characterizations. Anime Legato is dignified, always in control of himself and what he's doing. Manga Legato, however, is unstable, and often does things spontaneously out of his fanaticism. He is far from the cold, intimidating figure of his anime counterpart, and is in many ways a sympathetic character, which his anime counterpart is far from being.

Very well, I shall accept both versions of Legato into the tournament.

Does Saito really count as a villain? The only time he was in an antagonistic role was in the beginning of the Kyoto arc, and that was just to test Kenshin's skills.

My defense: Saito counts as a villain from up to the point where his Kenshin fight is stopped. Saito stopped following orders when his fight with Kenshin got heated and he wanted to do was kill Kenshin. I'm also not sure if they told him to severely injure Sano. In fact, I believe the only explanation for that was Saito saying he wanted to hurt Sano to show that he would slow down Kenshin when Himura goes after Shishio. I also think his episodes before they go to Kyoto are the absolute best part of the anime.

Going by that logic, he's rather weak as a villain then. In that time we. Barely get to learn anything about his character other than him being an old enemy of Kenshin who's just as skilled as him. When he's an ally to Kenshin in the rest of the series, we get to learn more about his character, and he's a bad-ass, but also clearly not a villain by that point. In any flash-back scenes, he's simply fighting on an opposing side, but once again he's not portrayed as a villain due to his honor code and how in a war there really are no good guys or bad guys.

For the very short time he's portrayed as a villain, it's actually probably when he's least interesting as a character, IMO. Also, despite temporarily losing control, he still was acting under orders from a government official, so it's not like he was operating outside the law or anything of that nature.

Yes. Although, fictionalized versions of historical figures are allowed. For example, you can't nominate Adolf Hitler, but you can nominate the Hitler seen in Wolfenstein 3D.Tthat sort of thing. One more thing, I know I said earlier that sometimes people may have different opinions on whether or not a character is a villain. However, some recent nominations have made me wonder if some sort of clear definition won't be necessary after all.

Also, adding the following:

Al Swearengen (Deadwood)
Letho of Gulet (The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings)
Squealer (From the New World)

I'm also thinking of nominating the villain from The Name of The Rose. On one hand, his identity is a spoiler, but on the other hand; the book is 34 years old and the movie is 28, so...

One of you should just delete/change the double nom, then. It doesn't really matter who, since either way Saruman is going to be in the competition. In fact, I originally nominated Griffith as part of my first ten nominations, but later Pharass nominated him too, so instead of pointing that out I figured I'd just revoke Griffith from my nominations and replace him with Iago, instead.  ;)

Oh yeah, can't forget:

Prince Baka (Level E)

I defend that you can classify him as a villain on the same grounds that you can classify Cartman as a villain. He's not evil in the traditional sense of the word, but in his case he gets so much delight out of mentally torturing and driving his "subjects" insane (in a way that turns out to be completely humorous to the viewers), is constantly breaking intergalactic laws and regulations, and  since it's a Togashi character, he can write him without feeling any signs of remorse or having any indications of having a lighter side. This guy is just plain twisted (in the most chuckle-worthy way possible, but still)

Also:

Doctor (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Because we can never have enough Togashi villains.

This guy is just plain twisted (in the most chuckle-worthy way possible, but still)

By similar logic then, I'll nominate...

Nabiki Tendo (Ranma 1/2) - She's not evil or actively antagonizes her family and Ranma, but she delights in conniving people out of their money and exploiting them through underhanded means. She also practically sold Ranma into prostitution at one point in the series, not to mention gambled the family into debt just to win a battle with a similar money-tight character. On a moral level, she's worse than Happosai, who at least has compassion for other people's problems sometimes.

Shampoo (Ranma 1/2) - Aside from being an actual villain in her first appearance, she tries to murder Akane and Ukyo at several points later in the manga just to get them out of the way so she can marry Ranma, and is unapologetic in using trickery to get what she wants.

Ran (Urusei Yatsura) - Ran's role in the series is basically to antagonize Lum to get revenge on her for causing all the traumatic experiences in her childhood, and she goes to great extents to do that. She is still technically Lum's friend, but that doesn't mean she wont' try to kill her on the drop of a hat too.

You get the picture, I won't explain the rest of these:

Ryoko Mendou (Urusei Yatsura)
Pantyhose Taro (Ranma 1/2)
Happosai (Ranma 1/2)
Ryu Kumon (Ranma 1/2)
The Girl Gang (Sugar, Ginger, and Pepper) (Urusei Yatsura)

And then, on the traditional side:

Jakotsu (InuYasha)
Renkotsu (InuYasha)
Hisoka (Hunter X Hunter)
Illumi Zoldyck (Hunter X Hunter)
Shaiapouf (Hunter X Hunter)
Welfin (Hunter X Hunter)

Before I start working on listing all the contenders I'll have to ask Foggle and Homura Akemi to replace the following of their choices:

Steven Moffatt (Dr. Who)
Vladimir Putin (I, Putin: A Portrait) (I checked and apparently,I, Putin: A portrait is a documentary).

I'm also on the fence on whether or not I should allow Captain Janeway and Space (Gravity) to be included in the tournament. My exposure to Voyager is fairly limited, but I don't think Janeway was ever portrayed in a villainous or antagonistic manner (at least not intentionally). As for Space, I haven't seen Gravity so there's a chance I could be mistaken, but I get the feeling that it would be like calling the iceberg in Titanic a villain.

I know I said that people may have different opinions on whether or not a character was really a villain, but when I said that I was referring to characters who are morally gray and who straddle the line between good and evil. Perhaps I could've been clearer on that.

It is.

Korosensei (Assassination Classroom) - I really, really struggled as to whether I should count him, since he doesn't act like a villain: in fact, he is the most heroic character in the manga. Yet, technically, he is a villain protagonist, a teacher, friend, guardian but also a enemy, criminal, and target to his students and co-teachers Irina and Karasuma. I'm pretty sure I know what the twist about his character could be from the first chapter...but then again my expectations could be totally wrong. He is certainly one of the most interestngly presented "villain" characters I've seen in fiction, since by all means I should and could consider him a hero. At the end of the day, though, he is still the villain of the story, and I think I should nominate him if only to shamelessly promote a manga and character I'm really enjoying.  :sly:

Akira Takaoka (Assassination Classroom)
Gakuho Asano (Assassination Classroom)
Sabato Rokudo (Rin-ne)
Renge (Rin-ne)
Captain Kuro (One Piece)
Arlong (One Piece)
Kaku (One Piece)
Eneru (One Piece)
Aokiji (One Piece)
Blackbeard (One Piece)
Suikotsu (InuYasha)
Tsubaki (InuYasha)
OVER (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)
Halekulani (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)
Pluto (Astro Boy)
Jiko-bo (Princess Mononoke)
Marik Ishtar (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Maximillion Pegasus (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Lorelei (Pokemon Adventures)
General Blue (Dragon Ball)
Giller (Animal Land)
Sailor Galaxia (Sailor Moon manga)
Wiseman/Death Phantom (Sailor Moon manga)
Mujaki (Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer)
Airachnid (Transformers Prime)
Predaking (Transformers Prime)
Judar (Magi)
Yukyuzan Anji (Rurouni Kenshin)
Gein (Rurouni Kenshin)
Crystal Boy (Space Adventure Cobra)
Envy (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Father (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Father (Codename: Kids Next Door)
The Delightful Children From Down The Lane (Codename: Kids Next Door)

Feel free to just remove mine. I couldn't think of a tenth villain to nominate, since everyone else had already taken a lot of my picks.

As you wish.

The op has now been updated with a complete list of nominees. I decided not to include Homura Akemi's nominations of Space or Captain Janeway. The former for obvious reasons and the second because, like I said, I don't think she was ever intentionally portrayed as villainous. I also tossed in a few late additions of my own:

The Library Killer (The Name of the Rose)
Tano Carridi (The Octopus)
Olrik (Blake & Mortimer)
Justin Crowe (Carnivale)
Roose Bolton (Game of Thrones)
Lucius Cornelius Sulla (Masters of Rome)
"Preacher" Harry Powell (The Night of the Hunter)

Man, I didn't even think of that one. Nice call. And it's great to see someone else who even remembers that movie. Such an underrated classic.

Also....

Vigo (Ghostbusters II)

OK, that's the last nomination from me, I swear!

Just so we're clear: This is the doctor who was a member of Sensui's group, right?

The Shredder (TMNT)
Agent Bishop (TMNT '03. My favorite thing about the show)
Proto Man (as Break Man in Mega Man 3)
Commander Rehalt Guou/Richard Guyot (Guyver)
Guyver 2 (Guyver)
Enzyme (Guyver)
Aptom (Guyver)

Desen, I've only seen Bishop in 2K3 and I wanted to point out how I liked the character so that's why I said which version.

"Alonzo is definitely the better villain of the 2, and I would attribute that in big part to him having a better portrayal than Vincent, since Denzel Washington is clearly a far better actor than Tom Cruise. Still, I think Vincent is a great and really memorable villain in his own right, and even though I normally do not like Tome Cruise's acting, this role is one of the only 2 or 3 exceptions for me among his entire career as an actor."

EK, this is your post from the first villain nomination thread here. Do you still like Alonzo more than Vincent? I noticed that you didn't even try to nominate Alonzo this time. Just curious.

List has been updated.

By the way, I checked and I can't find Friend (20th Century Boys) or General Woundwort (Watership Down) on the list of nominees. It's possible that I didn't check carefully enough so I'll hold off on adding them to list, unless they haven't been nominated already.

If they haven't been nominated then I'm sure no one would mind you adding them regardless.

How many nominees have there been, by the way?

Over nine-thou...
OK, it's  not that many. If I were to hazard a guess I'd say it's more than 300, at least.
I checked again and Friend was already on it, can't believe I missed him the first time.

I counted, and there are exactly 415 nominees. 5 per match and we'll have 83 matches in just the first round itself.

So yeah, it's gonna be a long one.

Before I forget; gunswordfist, I just now noticed that you nominated The Governor twice, so I need you to replace one of them with another villain.

Ladd Russo (Baccano!)
Szilard Quates (Baccano!)
Czeslaw Meyer (Baccano!)

Yeah I know we have more than enough nominations as it is, but I hope these can still be accepted, or else I can replace three of my previous noms with them.

Be seeing you.
