It certainly feels like a huge case of "Why now? Why not 15 years ago?" An 18-year-old who watched the first movie when it came out would be around Homer's age now.

Saw a guy on YouTube theorize the Ella McCay movie is part of some plan from Disney to go "Okay, James L Brooks. We'll give you the money to make this film if you help make the Simpsons sequel." And obviously, the theory falls apart since Brooks is already a rich producer with a long resume, if he wants to make a movie about a young politician, he has the money and connections to make it himself. Granted, his last movie cost $120 million despite being a regular-looking romcom. But still I can see why Disney would want to bribe old talent to come back since even their execs have to know Simpsons doesn't exactly have the most stellar reputation these days to bank a whole movie off of. The only way to pull a success is make something surprisingly good that can get word of mouth going, or a trashy IP crossover that confuses people enough into buying tickets like Homer driving to Colorado to meet Randy Marsh or something.

The 24-year era is finally over.

Couch gags are done.

Man, this sucks. One of the few elements of the show that remained consistently good post-decline is gone.

Dr. Insomniac

Yeah, I remember a time when a guest animator couch gag would be newsworthy, even if it wasn't all that. Shame even those days are gone.
