Favorite Games Ever (Besides Ninja Gaiden, Obviously)

Final Fantasy XII is on the list. Why that and no VI, VII, IX, Secret of Mana, or Chrono Trigger is your guess. I'm still puzzling how you can forget SMB3 from a video game list but remember Super Mario Maker (which just came out) which contains the SMB3 skin in it.

I'll just ask. Why does every one of these lists always have Portal but NEVER Portal 2 instead? The sequel is the better game in every conceivable way unless you're still obsessed with dead cake memes.

I guess its like wondering how you can have a list of top 50 video games and have no Sega Genesis games on it. It's only one of the best, most popular, and important systems ever. But, hey, Braid, Limbo, and Fez, am I right?

The top 4 are straight up fad choices.

The Last of Us is a few years old and has be treated very well. I'm not sure you can really call it that.

But yeah, that list is pretty bad.

Like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and Heavy Rain, it's currently going through a bit of a backlash. Not on the level of the third one, but it's not looked at as flawless as it was back when it came out.

Uncharted 2 at #23 is rather low considering only a few years ago it would have been in the top 5, easily. The other two would have been in the top 20 years ago, too.

Just realized that this list has Drop7 but no Rareware games what the actual fuck

Oh, shit, you're right. I Ctrl+F'd "Final Fantasy," but I guess I must have spelled it wrong...

Including a game that's only two weeks old on a list like this... :il_hahaha: They might as well have put Undertale and Soma on here, too.

AMEN. Portal 2 has better gameplay, better writing, better graphics, is four times as long, and it's always overshadowed by its predecessor. why

Oh my god, you're right. Not a single one. :shit:

People are literally using the same rhetoric to describe TLOU right now that they ascribed to GTA4 within the first three years of its launch. "Hollywood-quality writing... for real this time, guys!" The remaster just came out and is currently being bundled with PS4 consoles, so it's actually still in the "new car smell" phase. Let's see what people think of it in 2018.

Super Mario Maker is excellent, and one of the best create tool games I've played, but its still too early to list it on something like this. Not to mention, SMB3 is one of the best games ever made. It missing here is just crazy.

I also can't understand why any list would rank Halo 3 above the original. If it's for the multiplayer, then that's pretty irrelevant considering how few people still play it competitively. If it's for the campaign mode, then that's just ridiculous.

Spark Of Spirit

I don't think much effort was put into this at all.

It's the type of list that the authors probably think is on point and edgy, but will look back on it and cringe at a huge portion of their choices a few years from now.

They will then remedy that by replacing the games with whatever's temporarily popular, whenever that happens.

Meh, I'm sure MGSV deserves to be here. No need for that to be the first complaint.

Dragon Quest VII and VIII are officially being released here next year for the 3DS.

Big news since both of them are fan favorites and the 3DS versions appear to be the ideal versions of each.

Okay, now that Splatoon has finally released the last map I'm going to rank them here from best to worst. Since there are 16 different maps and multiple modes to go over, I'm just going to list them in an overall rank. Feel free to disagree, but this is what I thought of each of them.

BEST

1. Flounder Heights

The best map in the game. Flounder Heights is perfectly balanced to all weapon types. Snipers have lots of open paths to ink, mid-range has a lot of open battlefield, and the rollers have lots of nooks for hiding and surprise attacks. Not to mention the varying heights, every match on Flounder Heights is entirely different. When the sequel comes out, it needs to include this map in the base game. I'll be saddened if it doesn't come back.

2. Camp Triggerfish

This is a deceptively simple map, but what makes it so great is that it works perfectly with every game mode and is balanced for every weapon. The drop platforms at the one minute warning are done better in another level, but they add just enough variety to make this level have some very nice matches. The only gripe might be the nets that you can fall through can be annoying in a firefight, but that's just minor stuff. As a whole it is one of the best maps in Splatoon.

3. Museum D'Alfonsino

This map clearly took a lot of time to come out for a reason. There's a lot of moving parts, which makes it a very dynamic map with lots to do. The only negative is that since its so new it doesn't show up much in the rotation. Nintendo needs to broaden the map rotation to 3 instead of 2. Still, it is quite awesome.

4. Hammerhead Bridge

A narrow map with tons of tight corridors, yet snipers have much to do, Hammerhead Bridge is a map that shouldn't work but totally does. Small enough for the extra modes to work perfectly, it still shines in turf war where there is a surprising amount to ink. Such a shame it doesn't come up much in rotation.

5. Mahi-Mahi Resort

This is the map that takes the rising terrain idea in Camp Triggerfish and goes all out with it. You have to be careful on this map because the tide can turn at any moment. Also the fact that there are no surrounding walls makes death quite easy. It's a bit of a nerve-wracking map to play on, but it isn't like any other map in the game which makes it well worth playing on.

GREAT

6. Kelp Dome

Big and sprawling with many different tactics, Kelp Dome is an intimidating map to play on- in any mode. For me, this is the base standard for Splatoon maps. Plenty to ink, many different ways to do it, and a lot of space to play around in. The only fault with this map is that once one team has taken the majority, they are going to win as the map is very hard to take back. But that doesn't make it any less of a fun map.

7. Walleye Warehouse

The most well-known Splatoon map. It's also always a treat to play on. The devs hit a great balance on this level for making sure any weapon can dominate if the users are proficient enough: it's also one of the most fan to play Splat Zones on due to the wide open area in the middle. Back when there were only a handful of maps in the game, this was the one that I never complained about when it came up. It's the standard Splatoon map, and it's great.

8. Urchin Underpass [Revamped]

Boy, am I thankful this map was revamped. You see, the original map was probably one of the most unbalanced in the game. Once someone took the center, the match was over due to the poorly thought out choke-points all over the map. The revamp not only gets rid of the choke-points, but makes everything bigger making it the most wide open map in the game. The new map has so much to do and so many ways to do it that I still freeze when playing it not sure of what to do next. That overwhelmed feeling is the only reason it isn't higher, because otherwise it's a great map.

9. Moray Towers

The only fault of this map is how easily a team of snipers can lock it down. Otherwise, it is one of my favorite maps in the game. Thankfully, a lockdown doesn't happen too often, because the tall height and angled battles are a lot of fun. I know this map is a bit controversial to some, but I don't see why. With a few tweaks, this could easily be the best map in the game.

10. Arowana Mall

Speaking of controversial . . . this is one of the most hated maps in the game. And I don't see why. I can understand the hate of the slope near the center of the stage, but its really inconsequential. Every match I've played here (outside of one team being way better than the other) has been close and frantic, and there is something for everyone to do here regardless of the weapon or mode. Truthfully, I really like this map even back when it was overplayed.

GOOD

11. Piranha Pit

This stage is so close to being great that it hurts. What holds it back is that it is so tiny. Every single match ends with one team slaughtered because there isn't any real space to claim territory. The problem is that every gimmick in the level from the slopes to the conveyor belts to the islands are excellent. If the stage were twice as big in the center, this would be one of the best maps in the game. As it is it straddles the line.

12. Blackbelly Skatepark

So this is a strange placement for this level. I can only say that this is here because I like every other level better. Something about this stage just feels so bland and dull. I can have a great match here, but matches are either utter slaughters or a fight for a close victory and rarely just feel relaxed. I'm not sure really, but this map is just decent to me.

13. Port Mackerel

This map is awesome on every mode except Turf War. Lots of hiding places and narrow corridors and strategizing often rewards you with a cool moment or two. The problem? The map is awful on Turf War. There's nothing you can really ink and since there are so many obvious choke-points, matches here are either utter stalemates or end in one team being utterly demolished (I'm talking final results like 99% to 1% here) the other which rarely ends in a fun match. Should this map come back in the next game, they need to tweak it for Turf War.

14. Ancho-V Games

The most recent map is a bit of a disappointment. Now, don't get me wrong. The moving platforms are a lot of fun and I wish they were in more stages. The problem? That's all the stage has. There's nothing else to it. Splat Zones is a pretty annoying mode to play due to the platforms getting in the way and the map just has nothing that sticks out about it. It's a good stage overall, but that's all it is. There's nothing great about it.

BAD

15. Bluefin Depot

Hate this level. Hate it. I've never had a fun match here. The map favors long range over close range, there is a giant pit in the level's center that prevents maneuverability, and coordinating a team to ink is next to impossible. You'll probably be swarmed by three people on the other team more often than not because everyone else decided to go the other way. Fighting in the base is annoying due to the lack of ways to get a good angle on anything and those grates on the side make escape or storming an enemy base pointlessly frustrating. There is nothing fun about this map.

16. Saltspray Rig

Yes, this is one of the original maps, in fact the one the first demo came with in addition to Walleye Warehouse. Yes, it's a popular map. Yes, everyone loves it. But no one will call it a good map. Because it's not. It's the worst map in the game without question. Why is it bad? There is only one of two ways to play Saltspray Rig. The first is be a sniper which locks down every portion of the map due to there being places members of the opposite team CANNOT reach. The second is that once the center is taken, the match is done. It rarely ever gets reclaimed and if it does, it comes at the cost of every other inch of the map which will then be locked down by untouchable snipers. Every other mode blows here, too. The terrain is too uneven and obscure to get a footing in and there simply isn't much to do. This map is awful and I cannot fathom why it was included in the original demo, because it is undoubtedly an inferior map to every other one. Hopefully this is not revisited in a sequel.

And that's all 16 maps in the game. Splatoon has been one of the most fun I've had with a multiplayer game in a long time, and I hope the community sticks around now that all the maps and weapons are out. There are still Splatfests ahead, sure, but the game is no less fun than when it came out. Actually, it's better. My only hope for a sequel is that they improve even more on the great foundation they have and beef up the single player. When all is said and done, Splatoon was one of the best games of 2015 and I hope it continues to surprise and delight.
