Opposite of ek.

You really don't like S3&K that much?
He's part of the strange crowd that thinks Sonic 2 is the best game on the Genesis, but hates the sequel for improving everything.

Like those people who think Mega Man 4 is the best Mega Man game. I just don't see it.

I love Sonic 2, quite a lot, but I don't understand why some people think it's the best one. I like it better than the original and CD, myself, but I think that Sonic 3 & Knuckles pretty much took the best gameplay elements of all of the classic games and put it into one definitive package. For me, that's easily the best game in the entire series.

I'd go...

Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic 2 > Sonic CD = Sonic 1

However, at the same time, I'd also say
Sonic 2 > Sonic 3
Sonic 2 > Sonic & Knuckles

Though I guess that point isn't relevant cause S3&K is meant to be seen as one package.

Calling Sonic 2 the best isn't uncommon from what I've seen. It seems to be the fan favorite in general. And I can see why. But to dislike S3&K...?

Most people haven't even played Sonic 3 and/or Knuckles judging on sales. Sonic 2 is the highest selling Sonic game on the Genesis and most people simply didn't give the third game a chance. See Streets Of Rage 3 or Rolling Thunder 3 for examples of similar cases.

People outright hate it for having bigger levels, more playable characters, tighter physics, better controls and power-ups, and better game balance. I've heard all those criticisms leveled at it, none of which make sense beyond "Baw it's not Sonic 2!" and have never heard another real complaint against it beyond those.

It would be like me hating on Super Mario World over SMB3 because it has a better map. That wouldn't make sense.

I agree that most of those excuses are a bit lame. However, I can see why someone would prefer the smaller levels from Sonic 2.

There's nothing wrong with liking Sonic 2 the most, but will I never understand those who hate on or ignore Sonic 3.

The least they could do is to come up with actual reasons as to why it's bad, but they mostly end up saying it's worse for doing things better.

I always thought Sonic 3 was by and large the most popular game in the series. I think the only reason it didn't sell as well as 2 is probably because it wasn't a pack-in game.

It's popular due to being a Sonic game on the Genesis, but it was never a pack-in game and it never received as much commercial coverage as the first two games did.

That aside, I've never met anyone who didn't think it was excellent.

Does anyone else actually dislike S3&K though? I assumed GSF was just a retarded weirdo with an uncommon opinion.

If we were counting Sonic 3 & Knuckles as separate games, then my rankings would be:

Sonic 3 > Sonic 2 > Sonic & Knuckles > Sonic CD > Sonic 1

My rationale for that ranking is that, although Sonic 3 is incredibly short, it's gameplay improvements over the previous games gives it that much more replay value, and the large levels are fun to explore on repeat plays. It also only has one zone that I don't like, whereas Sonic 2 has two zones that I don't care for (and one of those zones has 3 acts). Sonic and Knuckles is also great, but I ranked it below Sonic 2 since aside from being short, two of its zones are filler levels, and Sandopolis Zone Act 2 is one of my least favorite levels from any Sonic game. Of course, if you put Sonic 3 & Knuckles together as the one complete experience that they were originally intended to be, then that solves the length issue, and overall it has the most consistent quality of any of the Sonic games that I have played. That said, Sonic 2 is still a masterpiece in its own right. Personally I'd say both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are among the top 10 best platformers that I have ever played, so I can't see how anyone who calls themselves a fan of the genre could dislike either of them.

Contra 4- 12
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles- 18
Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen- 15
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past- 16

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past both move onto the next round. It was a pretty close match this time, for the most part.

Round 2:

Match 5:

Borderlands 2

vs.

Deus Ex

vs.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

vs.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

I'm going to pass on this round.

Foggle

how can you make this round in good conscience

Deus Ex
Borderlands 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Majora's Mask

That was the hardest one yet.

I didn't make it. Some random tournament bracket generator that I found online did. :humhumhum:
