Twelve Angry Men and Rashomon move on to the final round, which shall be posted momentarily!

After nearly six months, it's finally time for us to crown a king among movies; the one, the only, the best movie ever. Over 150 movies vied for the honor, and tonight, only four remain standing. These four flicks are famously phenomenal, long beloved by fans and critics alike, and certainly favorites among many members of this board. That being said, only one of these may have the honor of being known as "the greatest." The only question is which it will be. Members of the board, the nominees for "The Greatest Live-Action Movie Ever" are...

Lights! Camera! Action! The Final Round!!

Rashomon

Twelve Angry Men

Back to the Future

VS.

Aliens

I have to say, this wasn't the final round I was expecting, but that certainly isn't a bad thing. I'm a bit worn out at the moment, so I'll have to edit in my explanations for my choices later. Suffice to say, though, these are all fantastic movies, and this match should prove to be a very close finish:

12 Angry Men - A film carried by the strong, powerful performances given by it's brilliant cast of actors. Brimming with strong characterization that presents 12 wholly real people, believable in their ways of thinking and their moral strengths and failings. With a strong message of digging deeper to find the truth, and giving every man the benefit of the doubt and the chance to be heard, 12AM has resonated with me over the years as a film about having the courage to do what's right, denounce prejudice, and strive for true justice in the world.

Rashomon - A beautifully made film with a brilliant and revolutionary use of lighting and innovative cinematography. The story is as rich thematically as it is visually, tackling powerful themes of the relativism of truth, the separation between fact and fiction, the fallacies of ego and bias, and the good and evil in a human being. Inspiring a now well-used trope involvin the difficulties in discerning truth from different, conflicting perspectives and potentially unreliable narrators, Rashomon stands as one of Kurosawa's most influential films in global popular culture, as well as film as an artistic medium.

Back to the Future - A fun and funny time-travel escapade with iconic characters, boasting a timeless coming of age story and a distinctly nostalgic feel that has endeared itself to audiences young and old and will continue to do so for decades to come.

Aliens - The order of this and BOTF was a toss-up for me, ultimately decided by the fact that there'd be a tie if I didn't order them this way, and ties are lame. Aliens is, of course, one of the most definitive action-horror and sci-fi films, with an incredible sense of danger and dread pervading the movie, building up the desperation of the characters bit by bit, scene by scene, all the way to the intense, action-packed climax between Ripley and the Alien Queen. The movie is carried by Ripley's strong desire to save any lives that she can, especially Newt, whose presence and character reflects Ripley's determination and well as her own fears and vulnerability, and the satisfaction that comes from her overcoming the odds and leaving LV-426 behind her for good has to be one the most emotionally relieving feats of survival in any action-horror flick out there.

The correct answer is that none of these are the greatest movie of all time.[/fact]

That said, they are great runner-ups.

Aliens
Back to the Future
12 Angry Men
Rashomon

Spark Of Spirit

Back to the Future
12 Angry Men
Rashomon
Aliens

I'd be fine with any of these winning, though.

Rashomon- Kurosawa's best are Seven Samurai and Ran, but this deserves to win as much as either of them do. Beautiful from start to finish.
Aliens- Easily among the best genre films ever made, but it can't top Kurosawa. It says a lot that this is the only film from the previous game's final 4 to make it to this game's, but here we are.
Back to the Future- This could have been above Aliens on another day, but I'm pretty confident with it being here. Easily among the greats in genre, though.
12 Angry Men- I'm just not that enthused about the film, but it's a great experiment done well. There are many, many other films that I'd rank above it, though.

TGTBATU being one of them, I hope. :>

I do think that 12AM is a true classic, though, and it deserves to be here, even though I'm still incredibly bitter about TGTBATU being out.

Well yeah!

I don't think TGTBATU has to win twice in a row, but yeah.

Back To The Future - Need to rewatch this.
12 Angry Men - I only viewed this movie once during its first round of the tournament but it's the only movie I like where dozens of people don't die so it holds a special place in my heart.
Rashomon - Yojimbo is better...and I did not plan on this or 12 Angry Men advancing instead of The Thing but I can't really complain. I did help them get here.
Aliens - Need to rewatch this.

And that does it for this competition! Personally, I'm quite satisfied with the winner and the final four. Regardless, I hope you guys had fun with this competition. I was very happy with the consistent participation and momentum this competition had. Even though it lasted for about half the year, I'm glad it didn't seem to outstay it's welcome. I'm also glad we were able to time this to end just around the end of summer, so we can start up another one to play through before the year's end. Let me know if you guys have any specific interests in what the next competition should be. Personally, I've been thinking that it might be fun to do a "Greatest _ Episodes" competition of some sort. There's plenty of possibilities, though, and I'm fine with running whatever you guys want to do next.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

Meh, I prefer the previous outcome from a few years ago. :bleh:

Semi-joking aside, it's a good top four. It was fun participating, too.

I'm kind of burned out on these competition threads in general, though, so I doubt that I'll participate in another one so soon.
