i would say sonic (1, 2 and cd) and mega man. i can't think of a series that stops at 3 or at least has something you could call a reasonable cutoff (for example, i would say the breath of fire snes games and the shining force genesis games are good dualogies)

Mega Man is a lot of fun but I do think 2 kind of outclasses the other games in the series. 1 is good but has some typical NES annoyances. 3 is good, too, as are most of the following games, but they never felt as fine-tuned as 2 for me.

And Sonic is great, but we don't need to discuss that one. Though I do think it makes more sense from a numerical sense to put 3 in there (even though CD came first).

gunswordfist

I dont even think about the 3d titles when i list sonic. i don't consider them to be in the same series, just like how i wouldn't group the advance games with the classics or 3d titles.

I wasn't referring to the 3D games. I don't even play those ones, really.

If you could pretend that DMC2 doesn't exist, then DMC1, 3, and 4 would make a pretty solid trilogy.

Other than that, I guess that I'd have to go with a boring and obvious answer like Super Mario Bros. on the NES, as it's the only trilogy that I can think of where each game is great, and the sequels each vastly improve in quality.

Mega Man X is great when it comes to the first 2 games, but I have yet to play the third one.

Here's another question: What are the best video game sequels/prequels/spin-offs?

Prequels:
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Yoshi's Island
Halo: Reach

Sequels:
Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles
Half-Life 2
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Spin-Offs:
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

I actually thought you liked SMB1 more than 2.

Prequels:
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Yoshi's Island

Sequels
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and if Super Mario Galaxy 1 counts as a sequel to Super Mario 64, it's on this list as well)
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Super Metroid
Silent Hill 3 (I'll leave out 2 since it's not really a sequel)
Fallout 3

Spin-Offs
Paper Mario 1 and 2

The whole Mario series is technically a spin-off of Donkey Kong, but I think we can agree to leave that as an exception. So I picked games that are spin-offs within that spin-off.

gunswordfist

bad sequels and games in series that i haven't played yet make these trilogy lists hard.

prequels:
mgs3
dmc 3
castlevania sotn
street fighter 4

sequels:
streets of rage 2
doom 2
resident evil 2 and 3
mega man 2-5, 7
ssx tricky
tony hawk pro skater 2
nba street vol. 2
vigilante 8 2nd offense
final fantasy 8 and 9
phantasy star iv
breath of fire 2
shining force 2
vectorman 2
street fighter 2
metal slug 2, 3 and xx
house of the dead 2
link's awakening and oracle of seasons

spin-offs:
duke nukem 3d
streets of rage remake
pac-man adventures
super puzzle fighter 2 hd turbo remix
crash team racing
super smash bros. 64 and melee

I can't really count that. For me, "prequel" should mean it was made after a previous work while taking place before it, but I also think it should have some relevance to that work. Of the games made prior to Symphony of the Night, the only one it's a prequel to is Bloodlines. And I don't think anyone would call it a prequel to that game, really. It just sort of happens to come later in the timeline. Castlevania III can qualify, though.

To be honest, the Castlevania timeline is a mess. The only reason I knew that it comes before Bloodlines is because I opened up the chronology on Wikipedia to make this post. It makes the Zelda timeline look like coherent. :P

gunswordfist

i had no clue. i thought sotn might have came before 1/iv.

Spark Of Spirit

Trilogy? I could say Mega Man Zero 1-3 since it pretty much encapsulates a whole story and 4 is kind of an epilogue, but that wouldn't be fair. I'll go with Timesplitters.

Sequels that vastly improve on originals:
Super Mario Bros. 3
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Ninja Gaiden II
Adventure Island II
Wario Land II
Donkey Kong '94 (technically a remake, but not really)
Sonic the Hedgehog CD
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Streets of Rage 2
Shinobi III
Rolling Thunder 2
Monster World IV
Mortal Kombat II
Street Fighter II
Bonk's Revenge
New Adventure Island
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country 2
Kirby Super Star
Super Metroid
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
Sengoku 3
Last Blade II
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Mega Man Zero 2
Mega Man Zero 3
Double Dragon Advance
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Mario Kart Double Dash
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Super Mario Galaxy 2

Sequels that are letdowns from the original:
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
Mega Man 4
Mega Man II (Game Boy)
Wario Land 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)
ActRaiser 2
Sonic 3D Blast
Castlevania: Dracula X
Super Air Zonk
Metal Slug 4
Fatal Fury 3 (thankfully they rectified this later)
Contra: Legacy of War
C: The Contra Adventure
Castlevania 64
Yoshi Story
Kirby 64
Every sequel to Mario Vs. Donkey Kong
Tony Hawk Underground 2 (and everything afterwards)
Mega Man X6
Mega Man X7
Star Fox Assault
Super Mario Sunshine

I noticed that the SNES and Genesis didn't have many disappointing sequels. Not incredibly so, anyway.

Another great sequel that I forgot to mention is Jet Set Radio Future. Also, in terms of sports games, Tony Hawk 2 and 3, NBA Street Vol. 2, and SSX Tricky need to be mentioned as well.

And how did I ever forget to mention Star Fox 64 or Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast?

If we're talking about (major) let-down sequels:
Halo 2
Devil May Cry 2
Ninja Gaiden 3
Soul Calibur III

There are other sequels that are inferior to their predecessors, but those are the ones that REALLY made me feel disappointed with their lack of quality in terms of meeting my expectations. Halo 2 and SCIII aren't even bad games, but both make the same mistake of removing/replacing most of the key things that I liked about the previous game in each respective series, whereas DMC2 and NG3 flat-out miss the point of their previous entries entirely.

gunswordfist

except, jsrf and tony hawk 3, i literally mentioned every game you named in your first paragraph, lol.

dmc 2 is probably the biggest disappointment for me.

Let-Down Sequels

Donkey Kong 64
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Star Fox Adventures
