Well, I don't know, I'm sure its a great series but I don't know if it'll be the type that I would enjoy. I mean, as someone who was turned off by the irritating elitists of the huge fan following that this series has quickly attained, I was a bit annoyed with how the main reason I heard for this show being good was that it was a "dark subversion" of the magical girl genre (a genre which I am largely unfamiliar with, for starters). I like that JO pointed out that this way of promoting a show would turn more people off than fans realize, and went on to explain that there's more to the show than that and that as a dark show and a tragedy it actually is backed by good writing, but even then I couldn't help but feel that the entire second half of your review was throwing the whole "tragedy" aspect of the show in your face without actually giving much reason as to why its well-done. I'm well aware that she had to hold back because she didn't want to spoil any of the plot, but that also makes the review fairly unconvincing for me.

I may still check the series out at some point in time, but I still can't stand most of this show's fan-base. Hell, I can't stand most anime fans these days because a lot of them love to get behind dark and/or intellectual shows (which on its own is fine) but most of them just shove those aspects down your throat and don't even seem to get WHAT it is that makes dark and/or intellectual shows well or badly written and executed.

I know that Dr. Insomniac likes this show, though, so I may just take his word for it on this one.

It's only 12 episodes, and you shouldn't let a fandom turn you off from a show. Most good shows have annoying fandoms.

True enough.

I mean, as a fan of HXH, I can honestly say that I fucking detest at least 90% of that series' fan-base, as well as more than half of Yoshihiro Togashi's general fan-base. The same goes with fans of Death Note, NGE, and even stuff from various other mediums like gaming (especially gaming, with the Ninja Gaiden fan-base being a primary example of one that I despise).

At any rate, I will give this show a shot whenever I can find to time to watch it in a short-span of time. With short series like this, I generally find them to be more enjoyable when watched over a short period of time rather than stretched out over a few weeks or so.

JO made a pretty interesting list.

I haven't seen the Mushishi or Gunslinger Girls episodes, but the other three are pretty unique choices. I agree with her Bebop episode, and probably also her Kino's Journey episode, but I don't think Paranoia Agent is a good choice for newbies, at least not this episode. I can't really think of which anime episodes I would choose for beginners, though.
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

The ending to that particular episode of Kino's Journey was one of the most genuinely memorable parts of the show, for me. As JO said, though, most of these episodes itself would be more befitting of getting people from the more "artsy" crowd into anime. I don't think I would necessarily recommend any of these episodes (or even some of these shows) as starter episodes to get someone into more mainstream entertainment to try out as their first samples of anime. That's not to belittle the value of these episodes themselves, as 2 of the 3 that I have seen are great, whereas the other one I can respect despite not being a fan of the show. As for the other 2 shows, I haven't seen those episodes, but I'm sure that they hold their own significant value being recommended by someone like JO. That said, based on the 1st episode of both Mushishi and Gunslinger Girl, neither show were really up my alley.

Wow, just wow. Didn't think she would post a vid on this. I was actually in the livestream for this and I couldn't stop laughing. Not that it was funny, but just at how bad it was.

After over a year and 3 months, JO has FINALLY made another anime review. Here's Attack on Titan part 1.

Huh, I didn't know she was making her own VN. I've never played one, but this looks promising. Hopefully she'll be able to make a quality game.

I remember when JO used to do insightful reviews and retrospectives. Then for some reason she  claimed that they were all crap (or that she just didn't care for them anymore), and instead did less structured videos where she just rambled on, and then she just stopped those altogether and pursued these sorts of projects. While. Have nothing against her following her own interests, I just preferred what she used to do, and going by her radio drama, I just don't find her own personal writing very interesting, so I've been ignoring her output for the past few years. It's a shame, because at a time, she was one of my favorite reviewers. Now she just doesn't seem to have nearly the same interests anymore.

Dr. Insomniac

Well at least she still writes ANN reviews! Like that Wolf Children review where she complained that Hosoda had no experience as a real mother. Or that Madoka 3 review which was a long recap with little constructive criticism.

Oh yeah, I highly disagree with her Wolf Children review.

I mean, how the hell is it a criticism that the children in Wolf CHILDREN start getting more focus as they grow up?

I don't mind having different opinions, but it seems that lately she's gotten a bit too snobby with her criticisms, IMO.

Well, that's what happens when Zac Bertschy enters the picture.

I'm willing to bet that the only reason she got together with Lord Fatass is so she could get a built-in platform at ANN with which to spout her shit opinions and get her name out there.

Best of all, she never has to defend herself anymore! Any time anybody says anything unkind to her Lardass sends his shit brigade (including a certain Zach Logan and Todd DuBois) over to do the flaming. It's just an amazing spectacle.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

It's a shame because she used to seem so quaint with her opinions and at least showed some level of respect for opinions that she disagreed with as long as they were well argued.

Well, I guess that was short-lived....
