The title says it all. What is your favorite film trilogy?
Evil Dead. I would have said The Godfather, but I can watch any Evil Dead movie at any time and love every minute, whereas I try to avoid watching Godfather Part 3.
By the way, I just figured I'd mentioned that people can break up trilogies. For example, saying Star Wars doesn't have to encompass both the original and the prequel trilogy. And I'd say the same thing for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
I imagine that is generally accepted to be the case though with these topics. :P
Man With No Name and Three Colors.
I'm going to pick an odd choice and say Toy Story. Very consistently great trilogy, even though I could probably list individual films from other trilogies that I prefer to any of these movies.
The Man with No Name and Back to the Future (I've warmed up to the 3rd film in recent years).
In secondary spots, I would pick the original Star Wars trilogy (fuck the haters, I enjoyed Return of the Jedi) as well as Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Also, I think that The Godfather Part 3 is a good movie, and actually rather underrated. Meanwhile, I always found 2 to be fairly overrated (though it IS still a better movie than 3). The first movie is the most well-balanced, to me, and the only one that I really ever go back to re-watch. That said, I still prefer the book to any of the movies.

Me too. ;D

I don't think it's a
bad movie, I just don't like it all that much.

While not one of my absolute favorites, I've gotta give an honorable mention to Evil Dead. Army of Darkness in particular is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen (though I'm still kinda partial to the original title, Medieval Dead).
This might be a cliche question for me, but what would you rate the three Godfather films? :P

I actually didn't know Return of the Jedi is frequently hated. I know it's the least liked of the three. And I can agree, it can be a bit cheesy. But I don't see how people could say it's bad. I mean, the scenes at the end with Luke, Darth Vader, and the Emperor are arguably the best parts of the entire trilogy. The Emperor in particular is an underrated character. Gotta be in my top 5 in terms of Star Wars characters.
I don't understand why Return is hated either. The Ewoks are kind of stupid, but I like pretty much everything else about it.

Part 3 - 6.5/10
I don't think Part 3 is bad by any means, I just think it's a lot weaker than the first two, so I've only seen it a couple times. It kind of closes out the trilogy on a sour note for me.

That's....kind of the point. Its not supposed to be a happy ending. Though, if by sour note you mean its not as good, I'd argue that very few 3rd movies are ever close to as good as the original.
Oh, BTW, I forgot to mention The Dark Knight trilogy as one of my secondary choices. While I don't think Batman Begins to be quite as good as everyone else makes it out to be (I still really like it, though), on the flip-side, I find that The Dark Knight Rises is a lot better than what some people give it credit for, so overall it still evens out to be one of the better movie trilogies that I have seen.

You know what I mean. Part 2 doesn't have a happy ending either.
"The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" No contest.

The Dark Knight and the original Star Wars. I can't put one above the other.

I like both trilogies, myself, though I'd personally have to give the edge to The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, if only because I feel that its one of the few trilogies that ended on a really high note with a 3rd film that was superior to the first 2 (IMO).
I still need to re-watch The Lord of the Rings Trilogy now that I have it on Blu-ray. I've got a feeling I'll like even more then when I first watched it.

Pretty much. Like I said, some of it is kinda grating, but the good parts make up for that completely.

Me four. ;D
Fixed, counting me. :P
Well, as far as The Godfather goes, I'd probably rate them like this:
Part 1- 9/10
Part 2- 8/10
Part 3- 7/10
I think with Part 2, my main problem is that....I honestly find Michael Corleone to be less interesting than he was in the first movie, and considering that he's really the main driving force of the movie, it kind of holds it back a little bit. Everything else about it is excellent, but I personally found the character more appealing when he was gradually developing from a straight, upright citizen to a cold-hearted mob boss ready to succeed his father's position once he passed. In the 2nd movie, now that he's already the Don right from the start, his character just feels less dynamic and more predictable than before, or at least that's how he came off to me.
Now, what I will say is that I LOVED the parts of the movie that explored Vito Corleone's past, from his early years in America to his rise to power as the Don. Robert De Niro did an excellent job in the role as the young Vito. His back-story was expanded upon from the few parts written about his past in the book, and being that Mario Puzo co-wrote the script for the movie, you could see that he really knew what he was doing with the character. I feel that these aspects of the film were tremendously good, and honestly my favorite part of any of the Godfather films. That said, I still feel that certain parts of the film set in the timeline of Michael Corleone's story could drag at times, and just didn't interest me quite as much. Its still a great film, but its certainly not my favorite Godfather movie. In that regard, I prefer the more interesting characters and better pacing of the first film. On that note, I loved Vito and Sonny's characters as well, so not having them in the 2nd film (with the exception of Sonny appearing in a flash-back at the end of the movie) kind of hurt it for me....but then again, I'm clearly pretty biased. :D
If only miniseries could count, then I'd pick the House of Cards trilogy in a heartbeat. But, alas...
And The Godfather trilogy isn't really a trilogy, but just a duology with an epilogue made years after.
Millenium trilogy. You guys pretty much got all the other ones.
LOTR, of course.
I would have said Die Hard as well if the second movie wasn't a step down from the rest and there weren't four (soon to be five) of them.
I haven't seen these movies in many years, and I refuse to hear any arguments that "new sequels" filmed literally decades after the last film change the nature of the original being a trilogy (and I have entirely Zero interest in seeing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), but I actually enjoy all 3 Indiana Jones films. A lot, judging from wence last I saw 'em. And... I don't even know why. I'm not a big action-adventure fan, I hate history, especially war history, I don't get a boner over Nazi's, and I lost my boner over Harrison Ford over a decade ago. I don't even like the Back to the Future franchise. Or Star Wars. Yet, I think these are all structured very similarly. And I would call myself a fan of Indie. Oh, and... Temple of Doom is my favorite. :P
However, if I were somehow allowed to simply choose a film series based on the first 3 films, even if they made a 4th the very next year and the storylines weren't linked between any two films anywhere, I would have to admit I love the first 3 Leprechaun films the most of any sequential franchise. And this is seriously rare. That I really love three of the first sequential films in any franchise this much. But, I always have insane fun with them.
I'll stay old school with Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
Bourne
Back to the Future. Also my favorite movie of all time. All three have quotable lines. All three hold up despite some dated 80s stuff in them. Just a great, funny and heartwarming story told in three parts.
It's almost 2015. Where's my flying Delorean? :humhumhum:
LOTR followed by Evil Dead. I want to rewatch Supercop and see all of Police Story 2. It might rank 3rd for me if they are good enough.
Oh yeah, Indiana Jones. And I need to actually watch all of the first two Back To The Futures.
The Before trilogy.
I feel like I'd go with the traditional choices, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
Star Wars original trilogy and LOTR for me, too. :D
Re ROTJ, (which I also do not hate, though I REALLY loath some of the later additions and updates!*) it isn't only the Ewoks. Lucas spent the first two movies building up a love triangle between Luke, Han and Leia. Then in Movie 3, he needed something for Vader to say that would goad Luke into attacking him. Practically right up to the day of filming, the script just said "Vader says something that makes Luke angry." Then Lucas had the brainwave that Leia would be Luke's sister and not only solve the battle problem, but save him from sorting out the romance. Nowadays, when Leia & Han are well-known canon and have kids and all, it's not a shocker, but back then it was a major "WTF????"
(*Seriously, Lapti Nek was a fun song, and they replaced it with that awful thing and dragged out the Jabba's Palace scene into a long, boring and stupid 'Look, we can do CGI now!' demo. I did kind of like the new ending, until they stuck what's-his-face New Anakin all over it. I have not yet seen the one where they add the NOOOOOOO! to the end battle, but suspect I will want to slap Lucas silly over it.)
Leia being Luke's sister was hinted at in Empire. Before Luke goes after Vader toward the end of that movie, Obi-Wan says that Luke is their last hope, and Yoda responds to that with "There is another".

I always thought that line was referring to Anakin fulfilling the prophecy, the "hope" being he somehow realizes the error of his ways and makes things right by destroying Palpatine and the empire, which is essentially what happened in the end.
Yeah, sorry Talonmalon333, by his own admission, Lucas had no idea Leia was Luke's sister when ESB was filmed. She retroactively became the 'another.'
Another fun bit of Star Wars trivia from back in the day...Dave Prowse, who played Darth Vader's body, was kind of a big-mouth, so they gave him fake lines to speak so he would not leak plot secrets. He had no idea he was Luke's father until he went to Empire Strikes Back and heard James Earl Jones tell him so. In fact, poor Dave had no idea he was going to be dubbed over until he saw the first Star Wars movie in the theater. And he was given the choice of playing Chewbacca or Darth Vader, and he chose Vader because he wanted his face to show in the movie and knew Chewie would be wearing a mask. All in all, Star Wars must have left him feeling pretty cheesed off.
I grew up a total Star Wars geek in the 70's and 80's, I know all sorts of fun things like this from when every little bit of information was hot news.
When did Lucas admit this?

When did Lucas admit this?
Way back when ROTJ was in (or recently out of) the theaters. George Lucas said it in an interview, though I can no longer say where the interview was. We obsessively read and re-read every magazine interview and newspaper we could get our hands on as kids.
Couldn't find confirmation online, but this interesting article in the Star Wars wikia claims that according to Gary Kurtz, Luke's sister (not Leia) originally was planned to appear in Episode 8. (It also claims that the 'another' was just something Lucas pulled out of his butt.) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sequel_trilogy
The wiki does say that the page needs citations to confirm the info, though.
That's a particularly interesting article for me because I remember Lucas originally stating there would be 9 films, then after the prequel trilogy he claimed he had never said such a thing. Ha!
