Let me try again for the top 20:

20 - Devil May Cry 3
19 - Starcraft II
18 - Super Mario Bros.
17 - DOOM
16 - Final Fantasy VI
15 - GoldenEye (YEP, ABOVE DOOM!)
14 - Super Mario World
13 - Metroid Prime
12 - Sonic The Hedgehog 2
11 - Bayonetta
10 - Gran Turismo 5
9 - Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
8 - Bejeweled
7 - Super Mario Bros. 3
6 - World Of Warcraft
5 - Killzone 2
4 - Shadow Of The Colossus
3 - Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2 - Uncharted 2
1 - Tetris

That hurt to type. Because that's just... wrong.

Actually, I doubt Bayonetta will even get ranked on the list, but if it does that wouldn't be wrong at all. It deserves a high ranking (well, OK, the top 20 might be too high, but it still deserves to be high on this list to represent the hack n' slash game genre). Also, DMC will probably be ranked instead of DMC3, but DMC3 is the better game, IMO (however the first game is undeniably way more influential).

Also, I'd be really surprised if they didn't rank The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm fine with A Link to the Past being there, but I'm almost certain that OoT will definitely be ranked on the list whether ATP is there or not.
Well, I assumed if Skyrim can make it on, Bayonetta might as well. But then again, one was made in Japan...

I honestly forgot about OoT. Replace one of the good games with it, since it's not taking one the lesser ones off.

I think some of you talked about making a modern gaming list around the time IGN made theirs, but that never turned into anything.
I don't even think I could pick 100 on my own, much less collaborate with the hack n slash freak, the PC nut, the furry, or the guy who thinks the best game ever made is a toss up between Skyward Sword or a pile of garbage.

I'm sure Shadow of the Colossus is a great or at least respectable game, but I've been turned off from both this and Ico ever since one of its devoted fans had the gall to tell me that Ninja Gaiden Black and NG2 were all flash and no substance and that Shadow of the Colossus was a better action game. I can NEVER take that seriously.
:D SotC is credited for being an action title now? It is, but people talk about it like it's some epic art form. I haven't played it myself and can't comment on the game more than that but I will make fun of the fans some more. I remember I was talking about how Ico was influenced by the original Prince Of Persia and some dumbass said that Ueda is too good or some shit to be influenced by another game, like the guy came up with the idea for the game out of thin air. I'm pretty sure I saw an interview where he said that he was instead influenced by PoP but I'm sure said dumbass would deny even video evidence since Ueda is the Messiah and all.

Did anyone ever rank Shadow of the Colossus above Ico?

I think one of the biggest problems with this lis is that they're trying to rank for both the best games that hold up and games that were the innovators, which is why they try to go with one particular game per franchise and go all over the place. You can't have it that way. Make it one or the other.

EGM did both a Greatest Games of All Time and of Their Time in separate magazines, and you know what? They weren't perfect, but they looked a lot more credible than these, since they aren't so messy.

One thing about Shadow of the Colossus is that it really is an example of how games should tell a story.

Spark Of Spirit

#1 will be Tetris, though. It always seems to be.

I've seen people describe the terrible slowdown as "part of the experience"...I don't see it.

9. Shadow of the Colossus
8.Goldeneye
7.Super Mario Bros. 3
6.The Legend of Zelda (NES)
5.Tetris
4.Asteroid's
3.Bioshock
2.A Link to the Past
1.Super Marios Bros.

I missed 20-13

Once again, meh. Still better than IGN's list by a longshot. This list still has problems of its own (as we all discussed).

Avaitor

20. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
19. Diablo 2
18. Ms. Pac-Man
17. Starcraft
16. Half-Life
15. Donkey Kong
14. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
13. Portal

Here's what you missed.

First of all, ASTEROIDS. SUCKS. How can anyone prefer that shit to Galaga and Space Invaders? It blew when it came out. It blows today.

Second, GoldenEye over DOOM II? Nope.

And why the fuck did the original Zelda crack the top 10? I'm sorry, but it doesn't hold up at all.

And really, when did anyone ever prefer Shadow of the Colossus to ico.

I'm sure that Desen will nail this better than I can, but these are some of the things that bug me.

Respectable, honestly.
Quote19. Diablo 2
Nice!
Quote18. Ms. Pac-Man
My mom's favorite game.
Quote17. Starcraft
Cool!
Quote16. Half-Life
Fuck yeah!
Quote15. Donkey Kong
Instead of DKC? That's wack.
Quote14. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
lol
Quote13. Portal
The sequel is at least 10x better and even that only deserves to be in, say, the top 50.

Quote9. Shadow of the Colossus
No.
Quote8.Goldeneye
Oh yeah, this is WAY better than Doom 2 and Half-Life. That's not just nostalgia talking or anything.
Quote7.Super Mario Bros. 3
Excellent!
Quote6.The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Zelda 1 better than OoT? They've got to be joking.
Quote5.Tetris
Eh, that's respectable.
Quote4.Asteroid's
You've got to be fucking kidding me here.
Quote3.Bioshock
Top 3? God no. On the list without even a mention of System Shock 2? Something's rotten in Denmark.
Quote2.A Link to the Past
Awesome!
Quote1.Super Marios Bros.
I love this game, but it shouldn't be #1.

As I thought, no Thief, F.E.A.R., System Shock, Fatal Frame, Yoshi's Island, DMC/Bayonetta, or Torment anywhere on this list (unless I missed them). List is automatically invalid.

Quote20. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Predictable. I'm not a fan, though.

Quote19. Diablo 2

Once again, predictable.

Quote18. Ms. Pac-Man

Seriously?

Quote17. Starcraft

Predictable.

Quote16. Half-Life

I still need to play the first game, but then I'm surprised that HL2 didn't even rank anywhere on this list if the first game ranks here. That just seems odd.

Quote15. Donkey Kong

First of all, if any DK game was to be on this list, its should have been a DKC game. Secondly, a DKC game being ranked in the top 20 is way too high, as much as I love those games (except for 3). Also, it should specifically be DKC2 that gets ranked. And its just bizarre that this ranks here yet Yoshi's Island is nowhere to be seen on the list (so yeah, this list just lost any sense of credibility with me).

Quote14. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Predictable, but at least its not in the top 10. Still, there's no way that this game is that good, and I've played quite a bit of it, before.

Quote13. Portal

Alright, I enjoyed this game well enough, but I'm sorry, it does NOT belong anywhere on this list. Its just a fun curiosity when you get down to it, and it has little to now actual replay value.

Quote12.Doom II

I still need to play this game, but I love the first one.

Quote11.Ocarina of Time

This should be in the top 10, IMO.

Quote10.World of Warcraft

Predictable. And, I can't stand this game, personally.

Quote9. Shadow of the Colossus

I've been turned off from this game before so I can't comment on it without having played it, but I seriously doubt that its really top 10 material.

Quote8.Goldeneye

Once again, way too high, and no way in hell should this be ranked above DOOM II, or even Halo for that matter.

Quote7.Super Mario Bros. 3

This should be number 1, and SMB should conversely be replaced with Yoshi's Island in this spot.

Quote6.The Legend of Zelda (NES)

This should be one of the Oracle games, or even Link's Awakening (which I don't care for but can still respect as a better game) instead. Like Avaitor said, while its a classic in its own right, the original Zelda just flat-out doesn't hold up anymore, especially among the 2D Zelda games.

Quote5.Tetris

I can sort of appreciate the importance of this game and how it helped to massively popularize early video games, but honestly I think its best to leave the past behind sometimes, and in this case its not really a noteworthy video game as much as it is a time-killer (much like Angry Birds, though I'll at least give this one some more respect given the time it came out at).

Quote4.Asteroid's

What?

Quote3.Bioshock

WAY, WAY, WAY TOO DAMN HIGH! Look, I really do like this game, but no way in hell is it top 3 material, let alone top 25 for that matter.

Quote2.A Link to the Past

This one actually seems right. For the record, I still get bored by this game and can't finish it, but I respect it a lot for really refining the key Zelda formula that got me to enjoy many of the other games in the series that came later on.

Quote1.Super Marios Bros.

This choice is understandable, but it really should be SMB3 instead, as that game perfected the art of 2D platforming.

My final thoughts:

This top 20 sucks. A Link to the Past is the only game that seems to belong right where it is (of the games that I have played), and while I can agree with some of the other choices, most of the list is full of entries that are either misplaced or don't belong in the top 20 at all (or in some cases even the top 100, at that).

Here's what you missed.

Bah! No DMC FTL! And I agree with Foggle, no DKC, but the original Donkey Kong makes it in? No Yoshi's Island was dissapointingly expected.

QuoteFirst of all, ASTEROIDS. SUCKS. How can anyone prefer that shit to Galaga and Space Invaders? It blew when it came out. It blows today.

If they were going to include Asteroid's, they should've had Geometry Wars too. That game basically takes Asteroid's basic formula, and makes it better in every way.

QuoteSecond, GoldenEye over DOOM II? Nope.

No Perfect Dark either.

That's another thing, the lack of DMC on this list is just flat-out wrong. I'm utterly shocked that it didn't make it here. There's no way that a God of War game should be ranked on this list while DMC is not present. It fucking started the hack n' slash genre AND still happens to be a far more robust and in-depth game than any God of War title, so the exclusion of it from this list just baffles me, as its both an important entry and a quality one in terms of still holding up to this day. Its not even like its obscure or anything, so how did it fail to rank on this list?

Also, F.E.A.R. should have been on this list as well, but I'm not surprised that it was ignored since it seems to be a trend to ignore PC games on lists like these, as I'm sure Foggle knows all to well.

Also, the lack of Max Payne on this list is just stupid, especially since its one of the best TPS games ever made (it should have been on here in place of Gears of War 3, IMO).

The exclusion of Yoshi's Island on this list just proves how ignorant they are of classic 2D gaming, especially when it comes to platformers. If they knew what they were talking about, we'd have this game, DKC2, and Mega Man X on this list as the VERY LEAST.

Avaitor

I seriously think that every Zelda game besides the CD-i and DS ones have more to offer today than the original Zelda. It's worth checking out for historical purposes and curiosity, but the franchise has been done so much better than it.

I will say that I'm fine with ALTTP at #2 though. I wouldn't have it so high if I was ranking it, but it is pretty close to perfect.

LoZ might not be as developed as later Zelda games. But to be completely honest... I think it has the best concept in the series. There's no linearity, no padding, no drawn-out cutscenes, no tedious puzzles, and none of Aonuma's surprises/gimmicks. It's just Zelda the way it was intended. Combat, dungeons, and exploration... Now sure, the game is a bit dated, in that your sword moves are limited and the map is unreadable, among other things. But I truly believe that if Nintendo were to take this concept and update it, we could have the best Zelda yet.
