As far as Galaxy 2 goes, I can do without those Fluzzard level's, those really aren't fun. I also didn't like having to collect a certain number of Stars to advance in the extra world, I like the way 3D Land did it better. Other than those two things, it's a really solid game.

Spark Of Spirit

I could do without purple coins and speed runs, that's pretty much the only thing keeping me from completing it 100%.

3D Land did well in removing those.

Wow, I actually got all 120 stars in Galaxy 2! I never thought that would happen!

So a question for those who have also managed to get 120 stars in the game... Where is the first green star in Bowser Jr's Flotilla? I don't see or hear it anywhere.

I got all the Green Stars which gives you... The Grandmaster Galaxy. The hardest Mario level by far.

I managed to beat it then learned I have to do it again without getting hit and without checkpoints. I almost made it, too. So hard.

NSMBW fans, I'd like to get your thoughts on IGN's review of this game.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/104/1044744p1.html

I know, I know, the fact that it's IGN discredits their existence right away. But still, I'm curious what your thoughts on it are. I'll give mine later.

Spark Of Spirit

I haven't read an IGN link in years (willingly) due to the way they acted around that game's release. As far as I'm concerned the article they spent bashing Nintendo for daring to make a retail 2D platformer pretty much killed their credibility with me.

I think that's a fair review; one of IGN's best, even. Aside from the online multiplayer bit, it's hard to argue with Harris' closing comments.

I do think the online part is actually kind of fair. It could've improved the game, though it's not too big an issue; this is still Mario. :P

My issue is with how they treat the game like a SMG follow-up. It's not. Not at all.

It's not, but I can understand people seeing things that way, since it was the first console Mario released after Galaxy.

But they expected it to be as big as Mario Galaxy. Mario GALAXY. :P

People also hated on 2 for being more of the same.

I played them back to back not too long ago, and they are pretty different from each other. The only similarity is the art style and the whole planet theme. Otherwise they're almost entirely different.

Yet it was still criticized by folks for being a rehash. Go figure. I remember people screaming at Ninty to make a sequel to SM64 back in the day, and now that they actually make a direct sequel it isn't good enough. Ayahyah...

Well, at least critically SMG2 received even more positive reviews than the first game, which itself was a critical success, so it must just be the hardcore Nintendo fanboys who complained about the game since they will find a reason to complain about anything.

I'm actually going to disagree with that bolded point. SMG2 is still outer space, of course. But it's aesthetics are generally a lot more... typical Mario. Bright, upbeat colors, and so on. On the other hand, SMG is more "moody", with more "deep space" colors. They seemed to spend more time and detail on it. SMG2 has nothing like it.

An easy way to compare the look of the two games is just by their box covers.

I guess it's just one of the things that were simplified for the sequel (along with story and hub). Actually, for this reason, I'm sometimes tempted to give the original SMG the edge for this reason. But SMG2's gameplay always wins.

Spark Of Spirit

I prefer the changes they made in Galaxy 2 to make it brighter. My problem with Galaxy 1 was that it was dark pretty much all the time, while 2 had more variety to it. Not to say the original didn't have its charm, but I liked how hard they tried to differentiate it from the first one.

That's one of the main reasons I think I like EAD 2 the most of Nintendo's teams. SMG2 and SM3DL are just perfect 3D Mario.

I think one of the reasons I prefer SMG's look is due to the astronomy lover in me. And I also just think there's a sort of magical beauty to the game. Like, it almost feels like Disney to me, in that aspect. The music of the game adds to this for me.

SMG and SMG2 are my favorites in the series. But I also adore SM3DL. As far as recent Mario games go though, I think I prefer NSMBW by a tiny bit. ;)
