Has there been anything of note on Yoshi's New Island lately?

Truth be told, that's the game I'm really waiting for. 16 years in the making for a legitimate sequel to Yoshi's Island... and I like what I've seen from the (albeit limited) footage that's available.

Spark Of Spirit

We learned that it was being made by the same team as the DS game just with a new company title.

Once I heard that news my hype for it drained out like a balloon.

Would they stop slapping the word "new" on everything already?  :wth: I swear, if they had called Dark Moon "Luigi's NEW Mansion", I wouldn't have been surprised.

And I never really got the love for Yoshi's Island, I suppose. I thought the DS title captured how boring it was perfectly.  :P

Spark Of Spirit

What didn't you like about it? I'm curious because the only negative opinion I herd was from Jeff Gertsman and he hates the SNES with a flaming rage.

Guh?  I never want to meet that man.
It doesn't matter what you say, soon you'll be dead anyway.

I've never heard him say a positive word about a SNES game, and he's supposed to be a game critic. Bitter Genesis fans who hung out in the arcades back in the 90s seem to harbor an odd hate for anything Nintendo.

Egg-aiming, baby Mario solo sections, the countdown and having to go back for the little bastard every time you lose him, one-hit kill spikes, the bosses, the art style. Nothing ever really meshed well for me with that game.

Last sentence was a playful jab, though. I know the game has a lot of fans. The DS game just felt like the same thing, except with less actual music.

Spark Of Spirit

My problem with the DS game was that it was less traditional platforming and more puzzle centered. The level design was also not very exciting.

The music is just inexcusable. It sounds like it's from the composer of the Sonic RPG.

I didn't play enough to remember it being more puzzle-orientated, unless you mean using the new babies to figure out some obstacles?

I do remember the insanely harsh difficulty spike around world 3 or 4 making me put the game down forever, though.

Spark Of Spirit

Yeah, it focuses more on using the babies and swapping repeatedly to get 100% on the levels which slows it down a lot. It wasn't really a game you could speed through. Specifically because only Baby Mario would let you run.

The challenge also became more about instant deaths and less about finding 100% which made going for the full points tedious and not worth trying for.

I think the game's okay, but I like the original way more.

Gah, really? Really? I must've missed that, though admittedly I never keep up to date with new game development as well as I should.

The footage still looks promising though, so... eh, I dunno. Here's hoping.

This x1000.

The gameplay in the DS version is decent enough, and I thought the addition of the new baby characters was a nice touch, but the music is just insufferable. That's probably the one thing that's degraded most in quality when it comes to this series after the original. Even Yoshi's Story, despite the fact that it's criminally easy, still had a decent gameplay framework... but that fucking music, man...

A bunch of new screens

That's pretty much as good as I can imagine a Mario game looking.

The graphics do look quite good, and a step above how they appeared initially.

EDIT: http://chargedblast.wordpress.com/2010/06/04/super-mario-rpg-legend-of-the-seven-stars-vs-paper-mario/

That article frightens me. It's like someone looked into my soul and wrote down my exact thoughts on Paper Mario compared to Super Mario RPG, and why I feel the former is so much better than the latter.

This just looks like so much fun.
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

I think I've come to the conclusion that a 2D platforming crossover between Mario and Sonic wouldn't be a good idea. The differing gameplay styles of the two franchises just wouldn't mesh well together. Sonic is far too fast to work with Mario.
