I think it would have to be 3D. But I think it could still work, especially now that Sonic has parkour as a way of having speedy platforming.

I think that Miyamoto is slowly, bit by bit, preparing for his retirement. It's something he's talked about, and I think I can see it here. Over the years, he has been establishing Eiji Aonuma has the next man in charge of Zelda. And since Galaxy, he's been trusting Yoshiaki Koizumi to take care of Mario. Though in that link he does state to be interested in smaller projects, but I think it's only a matter of time now. The man's getting old, after all.

Is it sad that my initial reaction was "maybe the next Paper Mario won't get royally fucked like Sticker Star was."?

Whatever man.

*I* liked Sticker Star.

Spark Of Spirit

It's about time he think about moving on, yes.

I haven't played Sticker Star but I don't really have a desire to. Three games is enough, and the ending of Super Paper Mario is a good cap for me and this series. One of the things I adored about the first three games was the story and dialogue. But since they apparently trimmed that down to almost nothing in the next game, it hurts my interest. Miyamoto honestly has a weird way about him when it comes to story in his games.

Well as long as the series isn't dominated by the New Super Mario Bros line, I think I can live.

RSW, are you okay?

Dude I was already going to get the game but that just made it a day one purchase. I'm a sucker for Galaxy-related stuff.

back in an egg where he belongs.

He's also in 2 games that are going completely under the radar at the moment.

Does it ever seem like Nintendo gives the middle finger to 2D Mario all the time, to any of you guys?

What I mean is that all of Nintendo's production values, bells and whistles, and overall efforts get put into 3D Mario games. Meanwhile, for 2D Mario, we get New Super Mario Bros., followed by New Super Mario Bros. 2.0, and so on. In every way, new 2D Mario games just seem so conservative. The graphics are "good enough", the music is "good enough" the level design is "good enough", and so on. I mean sure, there are variations. But for the most part, they are all bare bone, watered down strips of SMB3. I get the feeling like Nintendo sees 3D Mario as more important, like those are the main games and the NSMB series is just a 2D spin-off. And that really shouldn't be the case. It just makes Nintendo look all the more ignorant, like they forgot what got this franchise started, and what games really sell. So Mario Galaxy sold 10 million copies. Impressive? How about New Super Mario Bros., which sold nearly triple that number and likely still sells more despite being a few years older.

I just can't help but imagine if they made a 2D Mario game with the same production values and flash as 3D Mario. It could be mindblowing.  DKC Returns was given a lot of care and that game was vastly superior to NSMBWii, it makes the latter look so mediocre in comparison. Honestly, it's for things like this that make Nintendo look ignorant. It's as if they don't want to see 2D Mario steal 3D Mario's thunder, and so they just leave the NSMB franchise in the hands of a C-rate team while they give all their love to the next big 3D game. Seeing all those characters being playable in 3D World is the biggest betrayal to the 2D fans. For years, people have been looking at the NSMB games and begging Nintendo to make Peach playable and bring back their abilities from SMB2. But Nintendo just responded with BS like "it's too hard to animate her dress" as if we'd buy that. Next thing you know, we suddenly see all these characters pop up in the next 3D game. Clearly Nintendo didn't want to waste their creativity on a lowly 2D game and thus held these characters back until they got around to their next 3D game.
