I realize too that if anything I should be most nostalgic for the All Stars version, since it was the one I grew up with and the only version of SMB1 I had until Deluxe came out on the Game Boy Color, but I'm not.  After playing SMB1 in it's original format I've rarely ever looked back at the All Stars version, except in derision.
It doesn't matter what you say, soon you'll be dead anyway.

The updated graphics looked really nice for sure, it's just that the gameplay took a huge hit from the original IMO.

I do prefer the gameplay in the NES version, but I don't even necessarily think the gameplay is worse in the SNES one. It's just different.

The only game which suffers from game engine changes is SMB1 & Lost Levels (thanks to "floating up" after hitting a block).  SMB2 and 3 play virtually the same as the NES versions, only with better graphics & sound.

Which version I like really depends on what mood I'm in.  Sometimes I go for the originals, sometimes I go for the All-Stars versions.

Yep! :D

I haven't played All-Stars in a dog's age, but I remember liking 2 and 3 about as much as the originals.

Lost Levels remains lame with or without physic changes, but SMB1 had a much different feel. Not to mention they removed things like the minus world. It was undoubtedly the inferior version of the game.

But the vastly improved visuals and sound even them out somewhat. I can't bring myself to say the SNES version is "undoubtedly inferior".

Also, it's not like Minus World is anything special.  It's just 7-2 except it loops forever.  I don't really miss it in the All-Stars version.

Agreed. Minus World was classic, and I enjoyed going to it. But I don't need to visit it a second time. I mean, it's a glitch.

When porting All Stars to the Wii, they should have brought back the original physics for SMB1. Then, it would be a perfect remake and there would be no issues in the All Stars remakes. I know Nintendo wasn't interested in putting actual effort into that port, but they should have done at least this much.

Also, I do love SMB2 and SMB3 on SNES. Probably my preferred versions of those games. I'd put them

Spark Of Spirit

I've played all the version of SMB1 (All-Stars, Deluxe, NES) and I still think the original NES version is the best. The glitches are harmless and add to the game, and it has the best physics and controls.

I agree with these quotations.

Right, but I was saying they should have changed those physics for the Wii port of All Stars. Then it would be perfect as it would feel like the NES version, but with the superior graphics and sound of the SNES version.

My friend used to have Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. I remember parts of the screen being out in that version due to the system's limitations. But other than that, I do remember it having some nice extras, although I didn't play very much of it personally. They should bring Deluxe to Virtual Console, but with a non-cropped screen akin to the original version of the game.

Or just do my All Stars modification idea. But I guess they already missed the boat there. :P

I agree with these quotations.

I especially love SMB3's updated soundtrack. The main theme almost sounds tropical. And considering the remix of it in Super Smash Bros. Melee sounds like the type of music you'd listen to while relaxing on a beach, it seems as if that was Nintendo's intent and not just something I randomly thought.

I think, in that post, I was going to say something but then I rephrased it as something else, while leaving the beginning of my original sentence in there. :P
