Wish I could have made it to the final boss, then. I'm sure this isn't a popular opinion because it got rave reviews, but I honestly found the game to not even approach "pretty good." It lacked the smooth, fast, fluid character control of past 3D Mario games and had utterly sleep-inducing level design IMO. Probably my least favorite Mario platformer I've played.

Worse than Sunshine?

Yeah, the idea of "3D Mario gameplay with the 2D get to the goal style" is great, but SM3DL just seemed like a test run that they didn't really get down pat until World came out and built on everything about it. But I do believe that Land has the best Bowser fight in the series. I mean, World's is up there too, but there's something about a no-gimmick, Mario vs. Bowser extended sequence that just clicked so well with me.

And as much as I don't really care for the NSMB games, I quite liked U's final Bowser fight. That's one of the only things in the game that actually felt "new".  :P

The game gets great after you beat Bowser, but yeah, it's not amazing other than the Beach Theme.

SM3DW, however, was awesome.

To be honest, as gimmicky and unfair as it is, I actually like Sunshine quite a bit.

Hoping to finally pick that one up later this month! :joy:

I've actually been thinking of replaying it again soon, myself. The game was tons of fun.

That one looks great, but I do hope the next game is more like a successor to the Galaxy games, and I hope it comes on the Wii U.

what's everyone's favorite mario powerup?

Hammer Bros. suit. Hard weapon to use, yet really powerful when it hits. Nice risk and reward factor for using it.

I wish they would bring that back.

Think I've mentioned this before, but with Ninty now doing HD I would not mind a Sunshine 2 or Galaxy 3. Though a new "collect 120 stars" title wouldn't be unwelcome too.

hammer bros. was one of my favorites. heck, it might have been my favorite. i loved a lot of super mario bros. 3 powerups.

I liked Super Mario 64 DS enough to want to play through it to 150 stars again.  I'm glad they gave us brand new levels, different playable characters, and other objectives instead of just doing a straight port.  That said, I wasn't crazy about how the power-ups were only made for certain characters, or only certain characters could get certain stars, so if you entered a level with the wrong character, you were wasting your time.  Moreso than the original Mario 64, it feels like a guide was necessary.

Also, as I mentioned in the platformers thread, the controls and camera are showing their age.  It's very easy to lose a life because of the controls, which never really happened starting with Galaxy.

EDIT:  Favorite Mario power-up?  Propeller Mario.  It's such a life-saver in the levels with bottomless pits.  Also, I'm a big fan of the cat suit in 3D World, due to the climbing and diagonal attack.

I forget, were the controls in Sunshine better than 64's?

They were fantastic, it's just that the level design was filled with tons of frustrating bullshit.

talonmalon333

I remember them being a bit slippery in 64, but still good.

i am unfamiliar with both powerups. lol i have not played a mario younger than nsm ds.
