I'm now reminded, what happened to Splinter Cell? That used to be HUGE.
Conviction was pretty good. It was way too heavy on the shooting, but once you learned how to play it as a stealth game, it was a blast.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Starring Coco.

They casualized it for the dudebro crowd. Like I mentioned before, they stripped things out of the game to make it like everything else and take away its identity. I hear the new Hitman has the same problem, and we all saw what happened to Ninja Gaiden 3.

If Max Payne 3 is a success, then I hope that proves my earlier theory right and people begin to go back to their roots. Not to gloat, but I've never understood why they moved away in the first place.

Yeah, when I think military shooters, I think fucking Ice Loves Coco.
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

Absolution looks fine. It's streamlined, not casualized (or as some people like to say... ugh... "consolized"). They've only shown gameplay from what appears to be the first level so far. Yes, it looks extremely linear and forces action sequences on you... but so did Blood Money's first mission, and that's one of the greatest stealth games of all time.

It sold 3 million in the first week, and the PC version isn't even out yet. But a lot (and I mean a lot) of people are complaining about it being "too hard." Gamers just don't appreciate challenge anymore.

Good point, it's just a worrying trend when even games based on options (RPGs, Adventure, and Stealth games) seem to be going more and more streamlined in order to cater to the crowd that likes dual stick shooters almost as much as their beer and chips.

Different audiences are out there, but everyone is trying to go for the COD one.

That's more than most games sell their entire runs this gen. Point proved!  O0

Now I want it... I just need money.  :'(

Mega Man X2 was just added to the Virtual Console in Europe. As great as that news is, I hope they don't wait too long on the SNES version of X3, as that is definitely the rarest of the X games.

I'm glad Splinter Cell is getting a break for whatever reason. It's one of my favorite series but I didn't want them to get into this trend of constantly trying to one up the games. If they want something fresh, the series would need a gap where they aren't even doing a sequel for some years. Sam constantly chasing his daughters killers sounded like the game could go into the wrong direction. I haven't played the two current gen games yet so I can't really say for myself if they are pushing this "Fisher is darker now" thing two far. I'm kind of glad I don't because I can pick up those games and get Chaos Theory and beat that again. That should hold me over.

Although I do have to ask, if you guys were to compile a list of the objective best games ever made, what would you put at #1? When you factor in gameplay, influence, standing the test of time and all that stuff.

I personally think that compiling a list such as this for all of gaming as a whole is a lot harder than one for say, animated series or pop songs, since there are os many different genres, types of gameplay, methods of playing, etc to consider. But for me, I'd think that SMB3 and MGS1 would certainly be up there.
You are correct; in fact, I'd go so far as to say that compiling such a list would literally be impossible. Though if I were forced to make one, these games would top it:

Super Mario Bros. 3
Thief: The Dark Project
Deus Ex
Doom

Baldur's Gate Planescape: Torment, actually
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Grand Theft Auto 3
Devil May Cry
I believe Desen asked something similar to this (perfect games list, I believe it was called) and never finished the conversation on it. What a shame.

And the bolded to my list and:
Metal Slug 3
Contra Hard Corps
Sonic 2
Streets Of Rage 2
Phantasy Star IV
Einhander ( >:( SquarEnix)
Max Payne PC version (controls are as good as MP2 is for consoles and I think MP2 has the best console controls ever, Ninja Gaiden being a close 2nd)
Devil May Cry

Streets Of Rage Collection is up on XBLA right now for 800 points.

I believe it includes the Japanese versions of all the games, too. So if you do not own these games they are now on EVERY modern system. No excuse!

Japanese versions huh? I assume only 3 has big differences. I have all the games on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and yeah yeah the Japanese version of 3 (which is fun as hell) But anyway, the real incentive for me wanting to buy the other versions is online. Dumbass Backbone made none of the SUGC games online and I'd kill to play 1, 2 and Japanese 3 online.

The Backbone version of 2 has been delisted.

Also the virtual Console got Metal Slug 3 up today. They have yet to put up X (for whatever reason), but when they do then I'll have quite the shooter collection on my Wii.
