No, only purists say otherwise. It plays exactly the same only with longer stages.

Whether you prefer one or the other is up to you, but it does nothing worse than the NES game.

I haven't played the remake but I have seen the Happy Game Nerd's review of it. I can't judge the remake but some of the things he mentioned, such as every level being turned into a fetch quest, do sound a bit tiring. Again, though, I can't judge it.
