The stock is useful for the Red 9, though.

If you're going for headshots it definitely is. If you just want to use the knife strategy then you actually don't really need it since you'll be aiming for their legs or lower torso, which don't require quite as much accuracy.

I think it's a shame that they are finally bringing back Barry, now that Capcom is way dead. I wanted to see him make a return a long time ago.

Spark Of Spirit

Capcom should move on from Resident Evil. Don't you want something new, Talon?

I kid. But in all seriousness, I am pretty much done with the series at this point. I just wish we got certain things earlier. Not just Barry, but plenty of things, among them some resolution to the narrative dead ends in the series (Sherry, the growing tension between Wesker and Ada, etc.).

I was just thinking that, despite how much I love the awful dialogue and equally cheesy voice acting of RE1, I would easily take the files/journals in the game over that stuff any day.

I actually found the journals in RE4 to be more interesting than the main story. They really highlight all of the interesting concepts behind how an innocent and peaceful Spanish village was experimented on and corrupted with the Las Plagas. The main story is entertaining, but the backstory is genuinely intriguing.

To add onto that, I also was a big fan of RE4's credit sequence, which presented the beginning of Saddler's reign through illustrations. First you just see the people of the village living like, well, like normal people. You even see children, which was the point where it really hit me that I never saw any children in the village during the game. Then, the illustrations take on a darker color and you see Saddler arriving in the village to introduce the people to his "religion". Then, things go wrong, people start fighting, you see the dead children, and eventually, you see the first instance of the Las Plagas bursting from someone's head. And then, the backstory just ends. It paints a very creepy and gloomy picture, just seeing these normal people falling victim to this cult and turning into monsters, and the fact that it was presented through drawings made it all the more effective.

Yeah, I've seen other people actually point out that the credits sequence is actually the most interesting part of RE4's story (and as a genuine complement, rather than an insult to the main story), and I agree. It depicts a very disturbing and effectively creepy story with just visuals alone.

I've always personally felt that pre-RE5 games have had excellent and arguably scary concepts for stories, but have lacked the writing talent to execute those properly in the actual game's main story moments.

Most of them did. I do think there are some classic RE plotlines that went a little too overboard in concept, such as RE0 which had the worst story of the classic games thanks to an absurd villain. However, RE 1-3 had good concepts largely thanks to their simplicity, and 4 also works for its own separate reasons.

However, in terms of survival horror story, the Silent Hill trilogy remains king, in my opinion.

as a classic re fan, i want to get into the sh games.

Between the two, I'd call Silent Hill the better PlayStation series. It doesn't necessarily play especially well. But then again, neither did RE. However, like RE, the mechanics work very well with the type of game it is. Silent Hill also has a level of atmosphere and story that very few games match. Silent Hill 2 is especially a crowning achievement in design (though there are days when I am tempted to call 3 my personal favorite).

you're mostly referring to the tank controls, right?

i never got to play a whole silent hill game, just the very long silent hill 4 demo, which i liked.
