The Shadow Gentleman

It felt like a pretty standered ending, but it was a good one none the less. I absolutely loved the credits scene and nervous Gamagori.  :D

I can't wait to see what loose ends the OVA will tie up. A good end to a good show.

Great review. Basically says most of what I wanted to say, so now I don't have to write one. :sly: Good work!

RIP Satsuki's hair. ;_;7

Great review, Doc!  I haven't commented much on them, but I've really been enjoying your articles on each episodes as the show progressed (as I did Foggle's when he was writing them).

As for this episode, I'll agree that while it feels like a more traditional/predictable sort of way to end the series, the way the show presents it is what makes it so darn enjoyable and endearing, and because of that, it manages to feel fresh. Kill la Kill has it's own voice and flavor to it's story that makes even what seems usual feel exciting. I haven't seen A-Ko, but I do agree with the idea that the best works of fiction actually take inspiration from multiple great sources, and mix those influences into something that feels unique.

As for whether Kill la Kill'll be remembered in the future, well, I'm not sure how many imitators can hope to even capture it's energy and style even on a surface level, like the Haruhi knockoffs did. I think it'll be remembered just as well as Evangelion, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann. I would also like to see Trigger or somebody make more shows that are simple on the surface, but yet incredibly fun in the future, but that seems like a tall order. But since the series is doing well in reception and sales, it could be in the realm of possibility, and it'd be pleasant to see.

In the end, I loved Kill la Kill start to finish, and I'm sad to see it go. It was a fun ride.

Fantastic write-up. I've enjoyed your articles as well, but I never found the right thing to say about the. You did make me interested in Project A-Ko, however.

I think the show will be well-remembered for its crew alone. If nothing else I'm at least expecting Gunbuster/Diebuster levels of popularity.

I completely agree. More creators, both eastern and western, should take inspiration from multiple sources instead of just taking inspiration from other works in the field their using.

Anyway, I enjoyed the show and its finale. My only real dissapointment in the finale is that Satsuki didn't get a super upgrade and fight alongside Ryuko.

The OVA will be about everyone's graduation from Honnouji academy.

I was hoping for 20-minutes of Ryuko and Satsuki duking it out in one last badass battle, but this sounds good too.

I don't know if this is already known or not, but I found this kind of interesting:

QuoteAs everyone is aware, the titles for Kill la Kill episodes have all be taken from 70's-80's Japanese songs; the songs are loosely related to the actual content of the episode. The title for the finale episode comes from Ashita no Joe 2's ending theme: 果てしなき闇の彼方に, "Beyond the Endless Darkness". I'm posting this because while searching around I found a cover of the song by Mika Kobayashi, vocalist of Kill la Kill's own "Before my body is dry". Pretty fitting. Here are the lyrics:

You've hidden all the sad memories that you bear
You have been walking your life all alone
Now you find such sweet comfort
Your back has become so strong
All the bitter tears will flow
And you?ll pretend you don't realize.

There are days in which you cannot cry even when you want to cry
There are days in which you suffer and you have nobody to rely on
Trapped in the dark where you can't see anything
The dream you seek you may not be able to see
But there is something you must do
And it is to keep walking

Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow the sun will still rise
It doesn't matter how much you try, you can?t go back to yesterday
It?s the strange way of the river
There may be waterfalls and hardships
But until you see the sea?
It will continue to flow (the same kanji as the ryuu from Ryuuko)
    Until you see the sea?
It will continue to flow (the same kanji as the ryuu from Ryuuko)

And here's the video

It's a good song to reference. I'm also not too surprised, since Guren Lagaan payed homage to Ashita no Joe with a VERY iconic scene (which was in fact referencing the most iconic scene from AnJ). I won't say what it is so as not to spoil either series for anyone, but needless to say, it's the one part of TTGL that I really do like. Imaishi at least knows his classics. ;)

Also, in case anyone cares, here's the original version of the song:

English dub to premiere at Anime Expo.
I've never been this excited to get my digits on a particular anime release in years. But.... Aniplex... -_-
I predict they're going to charge a small fortune to own it. An arm and a leg. And a kidney. Possibly a spleen. Maybe a colon. Perhaps my cat's colon..

Well... I've decided they're not getting my colon at least. Spleens are for losers, right? And I'll still have one of everything else.

As for the cat... nice knowin' ya, kitty.
:>

Considering Aniplex charges $50 for a DVD with four episodes of Madoka Magica, I can't see owning the entire series costing any less than $200.
